Are there shortcut keys for headings?

I am using Word 2007.

Is there a way with the keyboard to select heading 2 or heading 2 etc,
without having to use the mouse and click the heading? I thought maybe I
could use Alt-Key combinations but when I select Alt, I see no key values for
the various headings.

You can use Ctrl+Shift+Left/Right arrow keys to apply the Heading styles.

first three heading levels.

Hi, I use Word 2003 in XP and there are no automatic shortcut keys but you
can add them by modifying the style in the template. To do this, I think the
easiest way would be to have a file that has each of the Heading n styles in
it--just create some lines and apply each heading to them. Once that is done,
then:

2. Choose Tools, Customize from the menu
3. Click the Keyboard button at the bottom of the dialog
4. Select "Styles" under Categories
5. Select Heading 1 style on the right
6. Type the shortcut key combo you'd like to use. I use Ctrl+Shift+n, where
n is the heading number (it appears as Ctrl+! in the dialog after you type it
in) and press Enter or click Assign
7. Make sure it says "Save change in Normal.dot" there at the bottom. You
want this change to apply to all future documents.

8. Do steps 5-7 for each of the heading styles.
9. Click Close twice

Sorry I see you are using Word 2007. I don't know why I missed that. I don't
know how to do it in Word 2007. I know the user interface is completely
different.

The shortcuts Ctrl+Alt+1, Ctrl+Alt+2, and Ctrl+Alt+3 work for the first
three heading levels in Word 2003 as well.

Thanks for responding Beth.

In my WORD 2007 Ctrl+Shift+Left/Right arrow keys does not have an effect on
my heading Styles. Instead, it appears to exttend selected text to the right
or left.

<g> I confess I use only the first because I have Alt+Ctrl+2 and Alt+Ctrl+3
assigned to ½ and ¾ (and Alt+Ctrl+4 to ¼). I prefer this to using the
AutoFormat As You Type setting for fractions because (a) sometimes I need to
type dates as 1/2 or 3/4, and (b) the AutoFormat doesn't work when you're
typing, say 5½.

The advantage of the Alt+Ctrl+1, 2, 3 shortcuts is that they will always
work to apply headings. Alt+Shift+Left/Right won't work if you're in a
paragraph that's part of a numbered list that doesn't include the heading
styles. I run into this with my Q&A template, which uses Headings 1 and 2
(unnumbered) and has questions that are part of a numbered list that doesn't
restart (numbering is continuous throughout the document).
