Are the Three Stooges in charge - GIANT MS antispyware?

I downloaded GIANTAntiSpywareMain.exe package TWICE, at 27 minutes each, plus
two checks for genuine Windows. First time did not work at all, and my CPU
ran flat out at 100% every time I started Windows. (May be unrelated, but
since I installed the 2nd package, everything OK.)

Second time installed but it still shows the OLD installation, and expiry
date of 31/12/2005.

=======================================
Setup for Microsoft AntiSpyware
version: 9.0.333.0
6.54 MB (6,860,424 bytes)

Latest download installed, but still reports:-

Microsoft AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.615
This version expires on: 31/12/2005
Spyware Definition Version: 5733 (27/11/2005 6:46:09 PM)

So, in conclusion, the whole bloody thing has been a waste of time.
Microsoft don't know if they have Giant or Microsoft software. They bought a
fully working product and have been in Beta ever since. They really are
copying Google, aren't they.

The three stooges have been put in charge of the development, and the person
in charge of pushing the two buttons; build and compile; should be fired.
Any drunk on the street corner could do it.

Would you trust these people to operate on your sister, let alone find
Malware on your PC.

For whatever reason, you've installed the old version. I hate to make this
recommendation, but you might try a reputable third-party download site to
be more certain of getting the right bits.

The high CPU usage might have been several issues--an install that didn't go
just right, or perhaps a definition update--these can involve high cpu, and
happen at startup under some circumstances. They shouldn't take more than 5
minutes or so, and once you are beyond that, all should be well.

I recommend that you either re-try the download, or try from an alternative
source. If you get the right file, the first message from the running
program should be an offer to upgrade the version now in place.

Since the installer from Microsoft can either be used to update or remove the
app, I'd suggest first removing the app since that is the safest way to
update the app given the installer can do wither operation.

Many people want to skip the removal step when updating from one version to
another. This isn't advisable unless the app must be installed to update the
software (i.e., updating from one version to another using an update
installation CD such as updating from Office 2000 to Office XP). It's better
to remove the original installation and then install the new version.

Since updating the build for MSAS is much more like installing a new version
since some new features are added, some bugs are fixed, and the expiration
date is changed (which isn't in a full version product), it's advisable to
unistall the old version before installing the new version.

Also, make certain that the copy you are trying to download states it's from
November, not July, which is when build 615 was released. If it states that
it's from July, then the build you are trying to dowload isn't the latest
build.

FYI: Every time you try to download something from Microsoft, it will run a
check of your system to see if you have genuine products. This is why WGA
ran each time you tried to download the installer. It's done this way to
make certain that you haven't installed an illegal copy of the software on
your system after you first used the site to download something.

I did a Google search: Results 1 - 10 of about 2,730,000 for CPU usage at
100%. (0.33 seconds)

That a lot of entries ..

First couple seem to blame ZoneAlarm VSMON.EXE which is running on my
Notebook PC, but has caused no problems before. Second blame MS Security
updates. Third is MS site on XP SP1 blames battery in Notebook.

I was going to update over the old program, but decided to do a clean
install this time. So I uninstalled MSAV GIANT with add/remove then run a
Reg checker which picked up all the Reg entries left behind. Deleted and
backed them up. Then deleted all the folder stuff left behind.

Then I clicked on the download program to start the clean install - AND
BUGGER ME! It was stuffed. 1st time ever from MS.

So I downloaded it again. 3K took 27 min each time.

Then I installed the old program, put the reg keys back, and folder stuff
from Trash bin. Would not work. So in add/remove did a repair and it worked.

This time I decided to install the new download over the old program. It
installed perfectly - but showed no change from the old program when
installed. Still going to expire NEW YEARS EVE.

Also, would MS give the updated program to third party sites and have the
buggered one on their official site? And would have assumed that from 3rd
party sites, it links back to MS for the download. Don't forget you need
your copy of WinXP checked by them each time - with a 420K download program
each time. Even though I have this on my PC.

And why not right click on ALL the associated programs and rename them
Windows Defender ( or WDAS ) instead of leaving it GIANTantispyware.

Also put the build number in the program, what does 9.0.333.0 mean?

I've downloaded this twice, 1st time did not work, but after clicking
installer, CPU stayed at 100% making it impossible to operate the computer.
After install old ver. again CPU OK. I'm on 56K dial-up till Feb12 when I
hope to move to ASDL 512K. So, not downloading agin unless I get guarantee
written in blood.
