Are Seagates drive no good any more ?

A few months ago hade a 500g Freeagent last just a few days, I now install a
ST3500320AS 10 days ago, now I am getting funny noises and XP lockups now
and again, and problems booting, lockups or delays, ran the Win SeaTools,
ran 5 short DST tests had one fail, trying a Long DST test.

Is this normal now and are we asking to much for such large drives.?

Are their any better drives..?

Like WD or Samsung..

or a better way to test this drive, SeaTools to me is utter crap, I found out
when testing the faulty Freeagent drive..

No, not even for Seagate.

Nope, none of mine have got that result.

Yep.

Like WD or Samsung..

I prefer Samsun myself.

You can do a long SMART test.

SMART does not work on Seagate drives as it Propriety info, only Seagate can
read it..

Unless you are referring to the Internal DST test, I have done one long one.

I have had Seagate drives giving bad results from New and giving the same
results many years later.

Plus the Drive has SMART Turned off...??

Is this an internal or external drive? If it's external then you might
want to try HD Sentinel, it can read the SMART info off of many external
drives.

A significant number of 3.5" drives I have seen requiring data
recovery have been Seagate (250GB or larger).

This either means they are selling in higher numbers than other
drives, or are less reliable, or I am not seeing a typical cross
section.

Thats just plain wrong. Everest etc can do SMART fine on seagate internal drives.

Havent bothered with Seagate drives for a long time now, none made in china.

That just affects whether the bios checks the smart status at boot time.

Doesnt affect the long SMART test.

A fail, regardless of short or long, is a very bad sign. I would
not trust this drive anymore.

No.

It sems Seagate is currently the worst quality leader. This changes
every few years and I suspect it is a management issue, not a
technological one. Seagate moved manufacturing to China some time
ago with the (sad to say) expected consequences. My current advice
is to stay clear of Seagate. Samsung has a very good track record
over the past years, Hitachi has recoverd and is good again, WD
is still a bit incompatible, but is also reliable.

I expect that as soon as Seagate gets its act together again,
one of the others will mess up and "optimize" manufacturing just
a bit too much.

Any reasonable SMART tool. Personally I use the smartmontools,
some people like Everest. The free version of Hard Disk Sentinel
(http://www.hdsentinel.com/usbharddisks.php) is also pretty nice.

Windows SeaTools shows it as being Disabled but not on another fitted Seagate
Drive..

This is a Internal SATA Drive.

So how can I turn SMART back on..?

Well to 3 Long Tests one Generics one DST and one long DOS shows that the
drive is OK..

But this online test give only 92% on a drive that has 5 day on its clock a
much older WD 120g with some 300day shows 99%, a 120g Seagate drive with
some 800 day has lower SMART readings than the new 500g drive with 5 days..

http://www.hddstatus.com/hdrepanalysis.php

Hard Disk Sentinel shows all drives are OK..

I have been a bit worried about my Enermax PSU as its Rated at 495W as I was
getting problems when I was trying to clear up a 40g Seagate for sale the
other day.

The Nvidia 7900GS AGP the XFX Manual just states 350W, this is very
misleading as its not taking into account what else you have in the Box, I
have a Number of Fans a Augity 2 sound card, 3 Hard Drives and 3 CD/DVD
Drives, Floppy and a Zip drive.

The PSU has twin 18A 12V lines but I have read that the 7900GS needs 20A..

Problem in a lot of PSU just up the 5V amps and not the 12V, they are using
outdated info..

Even the 600W Enermax PSU still only lists 12V 18A x 2

Some things of Interest..

Hard Drive Inspector list these 3 Drives

The new 10 days old 500g one as 95%

a 300 day old WD 120g as 100%

And the 800 days old 120g Seagate as 97%

So how come my New drives is so low, plus the Speedfan web sites list this
new drive as 92%

Some thing most don't know, only one test program support SMART Testing of
USB Drives, has a large range of Known USB Bridges.

That is Hard Disk Sentinel.

Speedfan NO.

Hard Drive Inspector NO

ActiveSMARTUSB only a few USB drives not Seagate..

EVEREST Home No.

Its just getting confused by the unusual way the Seagate SMART reports are done.

Thats also a steaming turd given the SMART report.

They are both confused by the Seagate SMART data which
lists perfectly normal data differently to other manufacturers.
Some thing most don't know,

Its been discussed here extensively in the past.
