I have wireless home network:
One wired main desktop XP with OE
One wireless laptop XP with OE
One wireless desktop 98se with OE
I am replacing the desktop 98 with desktop Vista with Mail
I have four OE addresses that I access only through the main desktop

QUESTIONS
Are OE and Mail compatible in this network? Or do I have to choose one or
the other?

If they are compatible, can I use the Mail setup wizard and insert the old
user name and address. Actually, I started the wizard and on page 2 it
autimatically inserted the old email address. I got scared then and quit the
wizard.

I am low to medium PC skill, but I think I can set up an email account if
it's safe in this network.

Thanks, Janter

To clear up a common misconception, email addresses don't belong to
a specific email program or a specific computer. Email addresses are
universal, and can be used with any email program, anywhere in the world.

Bob and Burr and Gary,

1. I think I just screwed up major time. I sent a reply to Bob and Burr via
their email address when I should have done it by "Reply Group." I have
included the msg below so that the forum can see it. Hopefully no harm or
offense was done and hopefully I'll get it right the next time. This is part
of the learning curve.

2. Also, by my mail inbox, indications are that Bob got the email OK, but
Burr's was rejected with the note:

" Host discussions.microsoft.com not found.

The following recipients did not receive this message:"

I'm not sure why the system didn't like Burr's address.

3. Gary wrote:

Gary, I think I know what you are talking about. I misspoke and/or used the
wrong words. This would reflect how little I know about the overall process.
But, I'm learning, with help like yours.

4. Today I completed Mail signup with my primary email. Now I have to get
into the books and learn how to access the other three email addresses/ OE
identities in Vista since Vista doesn't deal in identites. (I probably
didn't use the right words there either, but I'm working on it.)

Thanks to everybody

Bob,

Thanks very much for the info.

Late last night I decided to call cox.net. They gave me the same answers as
you did, plus answered other questions. After the conversation, I took time
to get all the settings with my four addresses on the wired XP and the
laptop copasetic, including being able to read all incoming msgs on both PCs
(per Burr Walnut's suggestion in this forum on 2/14). And everything still
looks great this am.

Today I will tackle adding the Vista Mail to the network. (With some
confidence, I might add.)

This is not meant to be an ad for cox.com, but I must include my opinion
(after being hooked up to their broadband for eight years). Access to live
support has always been great. Someone has always been there 24/7, and they
have always been helpful to their limits. Some personnel have been a bit
friendlier than others, but not any less than you can imagine after he/she
has answered the same simple (to the techie) question a hundred times as he
nears the end of an eight-hour shift.

Again, Bob and Burr, thanks for your contributions in this forum.

WHOOA! To finish this off, I just ran a Tools>Spelling and I got the
dialogue box "This language is no longer available for spell checking.
Please select another in the spelling options dialog."

What does that mean and where do I look to select another?

Janter

Janter, You're welcome.

I don't know who received the email you sent to me but it was certainly not
me because I use a bogus email address for newsgroups. You should do the
same otherwise you might be bombarded with spam.

Go to Tools>Options>Spelling. Select a language other than English and close
the window. Now go back in and change the language back to English.

The easiest way to run the spell check is to simply hit the F7 key.

Bob,

1. Thanks for the email address tip. I thought about that when I saw
nowhere @ nowere, but what do I know! I will take your cue and try it in
this reply.

2. I tried your language switch tip. It worked perfectly in Tools and F7.

Thanks

Be certain in each machine to go to Tools | Accounts | [Account] |
Properties | Advanced an set the options about leaving a copy on the server
if you want a copy on the received messages in each program.

Frank,

Thanks very much for the heads-up. I worked that portion of all three PCs by
selecting to leave a copy on the server after cox.net told be they can do
that.

I also selected to remove from server after 5 days (5 days being the
default).

What I am not sure of is exactly how that 5 days works.
For example, if I check email every day on one PC and no others, I think all
emails will be available for download to the other PCs for 5 days. But if I
don't check emails on the other PCs, emails older than 5 days will be dumped
by the server and will not be displayed to me. So if I wait 8 days, I will
get only the last 5 days. Is that correct?

My question of concern is: If I am out of town for 10 days and do no check
emails, what is available to me on each of the PCs when I get back?

Thanks for the help

Set them all to leave messages on the server.
Set ONLY one of the machines to delete messages from the server after a
number of days, a number that suits your usage, away from home, regularity
or booting the older machines etc.

Just remember that the machine that deletes from the server should check for
mail after the others.

The server won't delete any mail until the mail program on one of your
computers tells it to.

There is the rare exception of a few servers that won't keep anything once
it's been downloaded.
