Are HDD Coolers Effective?

I am wondering if hard disk drive coolers such as the Vantec V13-100
with 2x60mm fans are worthwhile products

Are they effective in reducing HDD temperatures, or is there littl
value to be gained for the money

So where do you mount the thing? It seems the
answer to your question depends on your case and
how effectively it's currently cooled and whether you
have the room to mount this kludge. As for the
effectiveness of its cooling, it probably works quite
well to cool and to generate noise.

If this is the one that screws on beneath the drive, then it is quite
effective.

However, the fans in these tend not to be entirely reliable.

Far better to attach a decent (Panaflo / Papst) fan to the front of your
case, blowing cool air in over as many as three drives per fan.

A lot quieter, too - and it blows ambient air in, rather than
recirculate the warm air already in the case.

Most people are throwing their money away buying such products. Check
running drive temperature now and compare against the drive specs.
Some drives run much hotter than others to begin with, and it is quite
possible (probable) your disks are well within normal operating range
.... assuming you are running the PC in your house and not inside some
closet.

I am running my PC in the basement, which is relatively cool (18C yea
round), so I suspect that cooling won't be a problem. I will follo
your advice and monitor temperatures (my PC has not been started u
yet for the first time), and then decide if a HDD cooler is needed

Some kind of cooling is recommended if your drives get a long workout.

The simplest method is buying a well designed case with a 120mm fan up
front cooling the drives. Just put a fan speed controller on it and
you can forget about drive temp problems.

Or you can play games with your data.
