Archiving vs. moving

When I want to offload old items from my mailbox, what is the difference
between using Outlook's Archiving feature and just moving them to a personal
folders file? The latter is often preferable because it is much faster, but
perhaps there are some advantages to using Archiving.

Doing it manually gives you better control on what is moved. Other than
that, there isn't much of a difference. Outlook's archiving engine will
move items to a PST and/or delete.

Thanks, Neo, for your reply.

Did I hear right? Archiving may DELETE messages?! Why does it do this, and
how would one prevent it?

Yep... its an option. Right click on a folder in Outlook and select
properties. Go to the archiving tab to see what options you have. (what is
marked on a folder overrides the global option @ tools > options > other >
auto archiving. note: assumed you are running outlook 98/2003. not
familiar with ol2007 new user interface.)

it’s a folder option - most useful to empty deleted items and junk email
folders automatically.
