Archive outlook 2003

I cant archive
I looked at my archive folder there are 2 files

archive 2.2 gig
archive 3.2 gig

When I open outlook I can see my 2 archive folders
I tried closing outlook then moving both archive files hoping I could start
from scratch, but when I open outlook up it prompts for both files
if I cancel out of that it still wont let me archive, when I try to archive,
it wants an archive file to append too
How can I stop it from looking for these to files when opening
I would like to start with a new archive file and remove existing 2 files,
If I ever need them I will import into another profile
my outlook file is about 900 megs
I thought with outlook 2003 the limit is 20 gigs?

Did you close the archive folders before moving them?

If not, try moving them back into the original location, restarting Outlook,
and closing them. Or, adjust the profile's attached files via Control
Panel, Mail, show profiles, properties, data files, remove.

IIRC the file limit depends on the pst format in use. If you use the older
format, the limit is much smaller.

I did move them back to original location and I no longer get prompts
your saying I should delete the archive files from within outlook to get rid
of them?

How can I convert to newer pst format?

Not delete them. Show the tree/folder view, then right-click on the
archive and choose Close. IIRC then you can move the file away and Outlook
will not ask for it.

They *are* older format files? You can create a new .PST file for
archival purposes, specifying it as the newer format. Then, select the
items from the older archive file, and use Edit/Copy to Folder to populate
the new archive file. Let it finish - be patient.

You may find that you need to manually create subfolders in the new archive
file, first, then go through folder by folder.
