Apps Slow to Open

Had a crash of some kind. All the English characters turned to some foreign
language. XP Pro SP2 restore did not work for many points. Had a 2wk old from
Sys. Mechanic. It worked. It worked only because I was familiar with the
interface and could determine what to select - foreign characters remember.
Had to reinstall a couple of programs. Defragged, ran several sypware/malware
programs, virus scan, and system appears to be clean. However, opening IE,
Explorer, and some other apps can take as long as 1 minute to open. Once in
the app, all is normal. Except it took me several tries to get the New
Question to open.

Running in the systray before and after the crash - NAV, SpySweeper, MSN
Messenger, ZoneAlarm, UPS, WeatherPulse, eBay Toolbar.

Need more info?

Problem resolved!!!! I had to uninstall SpySweeper, remove all remnants from
Program Files, remove Webroot software entries in the registry, reboot,
reinstall, update, and all is well.

However, still no idea what created the crash. If anyone has an idea, I
would like to know for future encounters (hope there are none though!).

Sorry for the slow reply. After finding the solution, didn't find a need to
return. To be honest, right now I do not recall why I chose to remove
SpySweeper. It may have been that I may have recently upgraded to the newest
version - it did have some bugs. As with some glitches, it could have been a
coincidence, software conflict, or ... But the result of the removal was
positive.
