That was my first choice. Install was flawless, machine was quick.
Unfortunately, I could not get the pcmcia network card configured to
save my neck.

I think I'd probably cheat and pick up an old 2nd hand PCMCIA for $5
after checking it was in the list of cards supported out of the box :)

I will be (re)configuring a PI-150MHz/32MB laptop for use on the road.
This will only be used occasionally for Internet access and email, and
for very basic word processing and spreadsheets. The user isn't
clueless, but he's not all that security conscious, either.

The configuration is complete. The machine is quite serviceable, and is
surprisingly quick. I did not go with 98lite; I did do a custom install
and omitted installing a lot of the fluff that came with Windows, like
games and screensavers and a lot of the multimedia stuff. Windows (and
IE/OE) are fully updated. Space used after all apps installed
(installers left on disk as well) is under 500MB.

If anyone finds themselves in a similar situation, here's what I ended
up with:

Abiword word processor
Spread32 spreadsheet
WinZip 8.0 archiver
Spell Check for OE
Foxit Reader pdf reader
Irfanview image viewer
Crap Cleaner cleanup utility
Spywareguard resident spyware protection
Spywareblaster spyware blocker
MVPS Hosts file "bad" site utility
IE-SPYAD "bad" site utilty
Stinger on-demand AV

The machine will use IE/OE for browsing and email. I'm counting on the
blockers I've put in place, the hotel connections being behind NAT, and
the user using some sense to prevent any major infestations.

The machine should be pretty darn decent for it's intended use.

Bottom line -- I will sacrifice optimal security for a small footprint
and low resource usage. This notebook won't carry mission critical
information; it will be more of a communications appliance for a young
co-worker that has to work trade shows a half dozen times a year.

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

Susan, you're Amazing!!! thanks for posting the correct urls.
(I should have spent the time looking for the most recent links
rather than just stating that the programs could be found on the
2003/4/5 pricelesswarehome pages, but I was lazy.)
regards, Helium

Couple of tweak tips:

7-zip is better in every respect than winzip imho. Just dont use ultra
compression with max dictionary size, not on that lil machine.

Opera 7.54 works well on much lower spec machines than yours, and
leaves IE in the dust.
Did you check if Stinger catches 100% of itw viri? Maybe it does but I
dont know, I thought the only 3 freebies that did were Avast, AVG and,
whatsitcalled... ugh!

Finally if you want more hdd space, putting no-install apps onto a CD
that is left in the drive will give you some more room. And it enables
you to put 700M of numerous apps on there with no performance or space
price tag. A good way to make use of this is to have 2 apps for each
function, one quick and lite and the other full blown. But the best
thing is having a huge array of apps to hand.

Finally List squared in a nice little app that looks like a spreadsheet
but without maths ability, tiny footprint, instant opening, and great
for some spreadsheet jobs (definitely not all).

Wintop is invaluable on a dino.

And if you ever need to upgrade speed and RAM in future, just install
liteshell, it will free up some of the existing CPU and RAM use.

Antivir?

BTW, Stinger is an on-demand scanner, not a real time scanner.

Thats it, those are the 3 that detect 100% of in the wild viri. Thre
are many other AVs that dont. DOS AV I would avoid as it tends not to
get updated, and to be very underused in practice.
