Appointment Reminders

I have appointments in my calendar as well as follow up reminders for emails
that I expect to see reminder pop ups for. This function is not working and
I am missing out on following items up when they should be due.

I have gone to Tools, Options, Other and clicked on the Advanced Options tab
button to ensure that the Display the reminder option is on (which it is).

Can anybody please help?
