Applying wrong style to numbered list

OK, I have just about had it with Word (2000)! Here's my problem. I have a
style I created for a numbered list which for the purposes of this post we'll
call style "A". So I type my list and I apply style "A" to the list. Instead
of numbering the list 1,2,3... it numbers is 6,7,8.... No problem, I go to
Format>Bullets and Numbering>Restart Numbering. Well, stupid application
renumbers the list and applies style "B" which is not only incorrect, but
does not even exist in my template. Okay, so I figure I delete style "B" from
my style list and I'll be okay. Try it again same result. Make a long story
short, I go through every thing I can think of including reattaching the
original template and deleting everything in that entire paragraph and
starting over from scratch, still no dice.
