Apply style to page and column break

My page and column breaks always take the style of the first paragraph on the next page. Since my chapter headings have a grey shading, this produces an ugly grey bar at the bottom of the previous page. How can I prevent this? Anyone?

If you apply the "Page break before" property to the style instead of
entering a manual page break, that will take care of the pages. No
workaround for column breaks, I'm afraid.
