Applications works differently on Win 98 & Win 2K

Steve Zalewski

I have a Microsoft Access 2K database application that
works just fine on my laptop which runs Win 98. When I
copy the Access 2K file to my desktop PC, and perform the
same sequence of actions, I get the following
error: "MSACCESS.exe has generated errors and will be
closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.
An error log is being created." At that point Access
terminates.
I have reinstalled Access on my desktop PC and still get
the same error. I have also copied the Access database to
another PC that also runs Win 2K and the same error
occurs. This seems to be a problem with Win 2K because the
error never occurs when running the database application
under Win 98.

I would appreciate help with two questions:

1. Any suggestions as to what to do now?

2. Where is the error log created and can it help me
diagnose this problem?

Thanks for any help.

Steve, there are several things you could try.

1. Service packs.
a. Choose About on the Help menu. If you don't see "Access 2000 SR-3", go to
support.microsoft.com and download Service Pack 3 for Office 2000.

b. If you are using Windows 2000, make sure you have at least Service Pack
3. (The server version has a problem with "Opportunitistic locking".)

2. Corruption
Presumably you have already tried Compact/Repair (Tools | Database
Utilities). Try this sequence:

a. Compact you database (to remove any temp. objects).

b. Create a new (blank) database.

c. In the new database, choose Options from the Tools menu.

d. On the General tab, turn off the Name AutoCorrect boxes. On the Advanced
tab, turn off "Open databases using record-level locking."

e. Import all objects from your existing database: File | Get External |
Import. If the import fails, you know

f. Press Ctrl+G to open the Immediate window. Choose References from the
Tools menu. Deselect any references you are not using. If you need more
information on references, see:
http://allenbrowne.com/ser-38.html

g. Choose Debug from the Tools menu. Correct anything that is preventing the
database from compiling.

e. Close the database, and make a backup of the database at this point.

Now test. If it still fails, take note of what you were doing at the time,
and see if it's always when you are accessing a particular object.

Allen,

Further analysis seems to indicate that the subform and
the query that is based upon may be suspect, although I
don't see why. The original reason that I created the
query is so I would have several computed values available
in subsequent forms and reports. Except for the problem
I've described in this thread, this has performed as
expected.

The query uses the values of [shares]*[price] to compute a
total value which is used in several other forms and
reports. In the subform that exhibits the problem, I sum
these total values to use elsewhere on the form. I could
not find a way to sum the total values for each record on
the subform if I made the computation in an unbound text
box rather than have it available from the query. Does
this provide any insights?

"Service Release 3" is correct for Access 2000, and you have the right
Service Pack for Windows.

You have pretty much eliminated corruption as a cause.

If you are not using the OLE Automation library, I would deselect that to
reduce the number of variables, but it won't solve this problem.

Using the query to generate the calculated fields is a perfectly appropriate
and logical thing to do. Sometimes Access misinterprets the data type of the
calculations, particularly where lots of entries are Null. If the calculated
field is displayed aligned left when you open the query directly, Access is
interpreting it as a text/string type. To prevent this possibility, you may
want to explicitly typecast the calcuation, i.e.:
CCur(Nz([shares] * [price], 0))

The clues you've garnered point towards some kind of concurrency issue, so
let's focus on that.

1. What kind of locking strategy are you using under:
Tools | Options | Advanced | Default Record Locking
I would suggest "No locks".
While you are there, also disable:
Open databases using record-level lockint
I've seen some concurrency issues solved by removing that.

2. When you open the other form and edit it, is it possible that the first
form is also being edited? To prevent this possibility, explicitly save
before opening the other form, e.g.:
If Me.Dirty Then
Me.Dirty = False
End If
DoCmd.OpenForm "MyOtherForm", ...

3. Concentrating on the query that is the source for this form: The subform
(and the slave form) both involve TableA and TableB. When you trigger the
crash, are you editing a field from TableA or from TableB? Does it crash for
editing fields from both tables or for only one of them?

4. Does the query contain any subqueries? I ran into a situation once where
JET queries crashed consistently with a particular subquery. I ended up
having to work around the problem by using stacked queries in place of the
subquery.

5. Concentrating on the forms, set the Format property of each text box that
is bound to a calculated field. Specify a format that indicates the data
type, e.g. Currency or General Number. Again I've seen Access get confused
about the data types in certain situations and crash, and setting the Format
property is a way to signal the data type of the calculated (or unbound)
controls.

Unfortunately, you are probably crashing Access quite often during this
trouble-shooting process. Can I suggest that you delete the crashed database
and restore a backup each time after the crash? This way you know that you
are working on a level playing field, and not one that is being
progressively corrupted further.

Hope that points you in a useful direction.

Hi ,
Let me tell you an amazing story...

Do not throw this mail away before you have read it. You have all to win and
nothing to loose. Here is a chance to earn a lot of money with no costs so
ever, and no obligations. So why not read the rest of this story and then,
if you think that this business is nothing for you? Throw this mail away
or...give it a try.

In this letter there is a part that tells you about the legalities of this
process. A part that tells of glamour stories, and a part that explains how
this "madness" actually works. The only part you truly have to concern
yourself with is the instructions. Follow the instructions carefully and you
can see how five dollars, probability, and multiplication will work to make
you thousands. I know it sounds too easy, I thought so too, but my advice to
you is...read on, what do you have to lose?

THE FORWARDED LETTER

Dear Friends: Greetings: I am a retired attorney. A few years ago a man came
to me with a letter. He asked me to verify the fact that this was legal to
do. I told him I would review it and get back to him. When I first read the
letter my client brought me, I thought it was some "off-the-wall" idea to
make money. A week and a half later we met in my office to discuss the
issue. I told him the letter he originally brought me was not 100% legal. My
client then asked me to alter it to make it perfectly legal. I asked him to
make one small change in the letter. I was still curious about the letter,
so he explained to me how it works. I thought it seemed like a long shot, so
I decided against participating. But before my client left, I asked him to
keep me updated on his results. About two months later, he called me to tell
me he had received over $800,000 in cash. I didn't believe him, so he asked
me to try this idea and find out for myself. I thought about it for a couple
of days and decided I really didn't have anything to lose, so I asked him
for a copy of the letters. I followed the instructions exactly, mailed 200
copies, and sure enough, the money started coming in! It arrived slowly at
first, but coming. I kept a precise record of the earnings, and in the end,
it totalled $978,493! I could hardly believe it. I met with my friend for
lunch to find out exactly how it worked. My part in this was to give my help
to him, making sure that the whole thing was legal, since no one wants to
take the risk of doing something illegal.

By now you are surely curious to know what small changes to make. If you
sent a letter like this one out, in order to be completely legal, you must
actually sell something in order to receive a dollar in return. So when you
send a dollar to each of the names on the list, you must include these words
in the message-box, "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST" and include your
name and emailaddress. The item you will receive for the dollar you sent to
the five people below is the message with the request.

At the time I first tried this idea, I was earning a good living as a
lawyer. But everyone in the legal profession will tell you there is a lot of
stress that comes with the job. I told myself if things worked out, I would
retire from my practice and play golf. I decided to try the letter again,
but this time I sent 500 copies. Three months later, I had totalled
$2,341,178!

Here are a few reasons a person might give for not trying this program:

€ Some people think they can never make a lot of money with anything this
simple.

€ Some are afraid they will be ridiculed for trying

€ Some dream of large sums of money, but do nothing to actually achieve it.

€ Some are just plain lazy.

€ Some are afraid of losing their investment. They think this program is
designed to beat them out of a few dollars.

The system works if you will just try it. But you must follow the simple
instructions exactly, and in less than three months, you will be looking at
$800,000 ! Keep what you are doing to yourself for awhile. Many will tell
you it won`t work and will try to talk you out of your dreams. Let them know
of your success after it works.

LETTERS FROM PARTICIPANTS IN THIS PROGRAM:
My name is David Rhodes. In 1992 my car was repossessed and bill collectors
were hounding me. I was laid off and my unemployment ran out. In October of
1992, I received a letter telling me how to earn a large sum of money
anytime I wanted. Of course, I was skeptical. But because I was so desperate
and virtually had nothing to lose, I gave it a try. In January 1993, my
family and I went on a 10-day cruise. The next month I bought a brand new
Mercedes with cash! I am currently building a home in Virginia and I will
never have to work again. This money program really works perfectly every
time. I have never failed to receive less than $500,000. This is a
legitimate, money-making opportunity. It does not require you to sell
anything or to come in contact with people. And , best of all, you only
leave the house to mail the letters. If you have always believed that
someday you would get the lucky break, then simply follow the instructions
and make dreams come true.

Larry McMahon, Norfolk, VA Six months ago, I received this letter and
ignored it. Five more came within a period of time and I ignored them also.
I was tempted, but I was convinced that they were just a Hoax. After three
weeks of deliberating, I decided to give it a try ( not expecting much ).
Two weeks went by and nothing happened. The fourth week was unbelievable! I
can't say I received $800,000 but I have received over $120,000. For the
first time in years, I am debt free. I am doing this again, only this time
starting with 500 post. I strongly recommend that you follow the
instructions exactly as outlined in this letter.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Go to www.paypal.com and open an account. (If you do this before the last
September you will be paid by Paypal with five dollar as a introduction
bonus so this effort will not cost you anything.) Forward a payment of
totally 5 dollar through your new PayPal account, 1 dollar each to the five
peoples mail-address listed in the bottom of this page. Select "Service" as
payment type. In the Subject field you should write "Mailing list" and in
the Note field write the following phrase, "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING
LIST" and include your name and emailaddress. What you are doing is
requesting a legitimate service and you are paying for it!

2. Now take the #1 name off the list that you see at the bottom, move the
other names up (5 becomes 4, 4 becomes 3, etc...) and add YOUR name as
number 5 on the list.

3. COPY this letter. You do not have to type it 200 times. Simply place your
cursor at the top of the page, hold it and drag it all the way down to the
end of the letter. Then click on "edit" and select "copy". Now open up a
notepad file on your computer and put the cursor at the top of the page in
the notepad, click on 'edit' and then select 'paste' it will copy the letter
for you onto your computer.
Remove the name next to the #1 on the list (the list at the bottom of the
message) and move the rest of the names up one position (#2 becomes #1, #3
becomes #2, etc.....) Then place your name and your mail-address (which is
your payment address at payPal) in the #5 position. Then save it, make sure
it is saved as a .txt file.

4. When you have completed the instructions, type the address of one of
these search engines.

www.google.com
www.yahoo.com
www.altavista.com
www.askjeeves.com
www.Altavista.com
www.Fathead.com
www.TotalSEEk.com
www.Dmoz.com
www.SearchPort.com
www.Jayde.com
www.HotBot.com
www.ICQ IT!.com
www.WorldLight.com
www.Dogpile.com

In the search box, type "message forums" or "discussion forums". A list of
over 2 million boards will come up. Go to each board name and right click on
the mouse. Select 'copy'. Then go to your "write mail" box, as if you were
about to write a letter and select 'paste'. Do that until you have at least
200 locations. The more boards you find, the higher your
income potential will be. The search engine will give you a ton of message
forums; don't just grab the ones on the first page, dig deep and grab some
from the middle and the back also, to help make sure you're visiting places
no one has been to already. When you've found your 200+ locations, "copy"
all your locations, "paste" them in a word document or notepad, and "Save"
the file. Once you have the locations, visit each one, register, and post
your letter. It's that simple. How many hours at your current job would it
take for you to make 6000 dollars ?

Post this article as a new message by highlighting the text of this letter
and selecting paste from the edit menu. Fill in the Subject with "This is
pretty amazing.......", THAT'S IT! You're done with your first one,
Congratulations. Some boards may be difficult to figure out where to post.
If any board is too problematic for any reason, simply move on to the next
board. Get some of your favourite CDs to listen to while you do this also.
Keep a copy of this letter so you can use it a second time. Post it out
again in six months, but Post it with the addresses you receive with each
dollar. It will work better the second time. NOTE: This service is 100%
legal - (Refer to title 18 section 1302 of the U.S. Postal & lottery laws).
You can also call the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161) to verify this. Hold
on to every letter and mailing list request you receive. They will be proof
of your service.

HOW THIS WORKS
When you send out 200 Posts, it is estimated that at least 15 people will
respond and send you a $1.00 to be placed on your mailing list ($15.00).
Those 15 will Post 200 Posts each and 225 people send you $1.00 to be placed
on your mailing list ($225.00). Those 225 people Post 200 Posts each and
3,375 people send you $1.00 to be placed on your mailing list ($3,375.00)
Those 3,375 post 200 posts each and 50,625 people send you $1.00 each
($50,625). Those 50,625 post 200 posts each and 759,375 people send you
$1.00 ($759,375.00) At this point your name drops off the list, but so far
you have received $813,615.00. Even if less then 15 people respond each
time, you will still receive an income in the tens of thousands of dollars.
The reality is, even if you only made a few hundred dollars out of all this,
that's still an excellent return for such a miniscule investment. Most
people spend a lot more on lottery tickets and have nothing to show for it,
and forget about how much money is needed to play the market. Also, after
posting this message on 100 message boards, it may get boring.
Stay focused on what you want and don't quit until you finish.

P.S.
This program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the
participants and by their carefully adhering to the directions. Look at it
this way. If you are of integrity, the program will continue and the money
that so many others have received will come your way.

When your money begins to come in, give the first 10% to charity with spirit
and share a good fortune!

Hi ,
Let me tell you an amazing story...

ADDRESSES TO SEND YOUR PAYMENT OF 1 DOLLAR EACH TO (THROUGH YOUR PAYPAL
ACCOUNT) AND THE MAILING LIST REQUEST:

bonus, 5 dollar, so this experience will cost you nothing!!!)

Steve, I'm just about out of ideas here. It sounds like a problem in the way
JET is handling the concurrency issues (multiple copies of the same data),
but you have done everything conceivable to clarify the situation.

If you are not editing subform records, would it be possible to base the
subform directly on tableB instead of on the query? That may help.

Also, if you open the subform in design view, select the subform control,
and in the Properties box, check the settings in LinkMasterFields and
LinkChildFields (Data tab). Are these set correctly? Does the data type of
these two match? Is there a relationship with Referential Integrity enforced
on these fields between the tables?

If those two things don't help, the only other idea I can suggest is to take
it up with Microsoft Product Support.

Allen,

Thanks again for responding. My actions to your
suggestions are preceded by an "*" below. I've placed
additional notes at the end of this email.

If you are not using the OLE Automation library, I would
deselect that to
reduce the number of variables, but it won't solve this
problem.
* Done

Using the query to generate the calculated fields is a
perfectly appropriate
and logical thing to do. Sometimes Access misinterprets
the data type of the
calculations, particularly where lots of entries are Null.
If the calculated
field is displayed aligned left when you open the query
directly, Access is
interpreting it as a text/string type. To prevent this
possibility, you may
want to explicitly typecast the calcuation, i.e.:
CCur(Nz([shares] * [price], 0))
* No effect.

The clues you've garnered point towards some kind of
concurrency issue, so
let's focus on that.

1. What kind of locking strategy are you using under:
Tools | Options | Advanced | Default Record Locking
I would suggest "No locks".
* Was already "No Locks"

While you are there, also disable:
Open databases using record-level lockint
I've seen some concurrency issues solved by removing that.
* Was already disabled

2. When you open the other form and edit it, is it
possible that the first
form is also being edited? To prevent this possibility,
explicitly save
before opening the other form, e.g.:
If Me.Dirty Then
Me.Dirty = False
End If
DoCmd.OpenForm "MyOtherForm", ...
* Yes. The button on the the subform calls another form
that is based upon the same query that the subform is
based upon. I added the command sequence you suggested
but it had no effect.

3. Concentrating on the query that is the source for this
form: The subform
(and the slave form) both involve TableA and TableB. When
you trigger the
crash, are you editing a field from TableA or from TableB?
Does it crash for
editing fields from both tables or for only one of them?
* I only show fields from Table B in the slave form.
Therefore, the changes are made to Table B only.

4. Does the query contain any subqueries? I ran into a
situation once where
JET queries crashed consistently with a particular
subquery. I ended up
having to work around the problem by using stacked queries
in place of the
subquery.
* I have no subqueries. All queries are inner joins only.

5. Concentrating on the forms, set the Format property of
each text box that
is bound to a calculated field. Specify a format that
indicates the data
type, e.g. Currency or General Number. Again I've seen
Access get confused
about the data types in certain situations and crash, and
setting the Format
property is a way to signal the data type of the
calculated (or unbound)
controls.
* Done. There were a couple of controls that weren't
specifically typed. I changed those but, again, the
problem remains.

Unfortunately, you are probably crashing Access quite
often during this
trouble-shooting process. Can I suggest that you delete
the crashed database
and restore a backup each time after the crash? This way
you know that you
are working on a level playing field, and not one that is
being
progressively corrupted further.
* Yes. I have been starting with a clean database each
time.

Hope that points you in a useful direction.

Allen,

I very much appreciate your feedback to this problem.
Although I still have the problem, your suggestions were
reasonable and clearly reflect your expertise with
Access. If you can think of anything else for me to try,
I'm ready. I am totally befuddled with this problem,
especially when it works successfully on Windows 98. It
seems that the only practical solution is to modify my
expectations as to the ability of Access to perform the
task I need. I can certainly alter the application so
that it works without crashing, but it is a defeat and the
application will be less efective. But I've heard
that "It's a good general that knows when to retreat." and
this may be one of those times.

Thanks again for your help.

Not sure if you problem is related to a problem I had. It sounds similar,
but my problem was Access 2K on W2K to Access XP on WinXP...Took about a
week working with MS to get to the solution.

In any case, the fix to my problem was to turn off the Name AutoCorrect
feature. (Tools | Options | General | Name AutoCorrect)

The caveat is that you need to remember to turn it back on if you're making
changes to the database where you might change FieldNames. Turn it off when
you're done. The MS Tech I worked with reported the problem as a bug, so
hopefully, it will be fixed in a future release.

Let me know if this works for you.

Allen,

Looks like we're both out of ideas on this one. Thanks
for your responses in any case. I'm recreating the form
links so that they deal with a single table rather than
basing them on the query. It seems that whenever I have a
calculated column in the query, I get the error. BTW, do
you know where the "error log" that I refer to in my
original post is created? I'd sure like to see what
Access is interpreting as an error. Thanks again for your
help, Allen.

Allen,

After a few more hours of work on this problem, I've
found, what seems to be a fundamental problem in my
installation of Access. And I believe I can demonstrate
that this must clearly be a problem with Access and not my
database. The problem is, I don't know how to fix it.

To summarize:
1. I have a form with a subform.
2. The subform is based on a query that is an inner join
of "Table A" and "Table B".

Now, here's the juicy part...
If I add/delete/update any data FROM "TABLE A", even if I
edit the table directly and not through the form, the next
time I open the form, I get the error!

I've already reinstalled Access on my PC. Any thoughts on
this?

Thanks for your help.

Steve

S

Steve Zalewski

Allen,

I think I have solved the problem but I can't explain all
of my observations over the course of solving it. I think
the fundamental problem is that my form is too complicated
for Access. But I can't explain why a change in the table
directly causes an error in the form.

In any case, I have the following calculation for a
control on my main form:
=[Eprofit]/[MFSubform].Form!Suminvested
where eprofit is a control on the main form defined as
=[MFSubform].Form!Subprofit
where Subprofit is a control on the subform defined as
=Sum([Profit])
and Suminvested is the name of a control on the subform.

I think what I should have done, and I will in the future,
is compute all values that use data from the subform, on
the subform itself and refer to the subform control names
on the main form. I believe where I went wrong is in
the "=[Eprofit]/[MFSubform].Form!Suminvested" statement.
I think I should have computed this value on the subform
and then referred to the subform control on the main form.

Although it seems like it should work the way I've encoded
it, and indeed it does on Windows 98, but clearly
something's different with Win 2K.

Thanks again with all your help.
