Applications take 30 seconds + to load

My applications take about 30 seconds + to load.
Applications like word, excel, IE, etc. they all take an
agonizing amount of time to load.

The first thing that pops in mind is that you may simply
have a slow processor or a low amount of memory. If this
is not the case, then you may have a program running
constantly (such as a firewall) which is taking up a
large amount of memory. Try disabling ALL applications
that are running, then see how long it takes to load a
simple application such as Wordpad. By going through a
systematic check, you can see whether or not an
application such as a firewall (or even Kazaa) is
actually taking up memory.

Check that your FAT is in good condition and not mis-reporting the amount of
freespace on a drive. An effect of this can sometimes be much increased
delays esp. disk reads and writes.
