Applications Slow Not RESPONDING

I am new to XP and have been using it for less than 3 months. In the last few
weeks I am having recurring problems with applications not responding or
being extremely slow. Especially Paint, Photoshop and IE.Also, dialog windows
will open and close only partially (text is cut off part of window is gray;
windows cascade one fter another only partly open somethimes up to 12 times).
I have followed maintainence instructions for clearing cache, defragmenting,
for IE I power cycle modem even bought a registry cleaner but problems
persist. thank you
 
How much RAM, what size hard disk and how free disk space do you have?

512 Ram; not sure of hard disk; 44.9 GB free space. 1.73 GHz which I hoped
would make it a little speedier...
 
Top 3 reasons for slow performance:

1. Viruses and spyware
2. Too many programs running.
3. User misconfiguration.
