XP Home. NAV 2002 LiveUpdate recently wanted to update a software component
(redirector) but after downloading, the attempt to install it failed (setup
encountered a problem & must close.. etc.). Decided to upgrade my
SystemWorks to 2004. On installing, I get "Setup has encountered a
problem..." again!! Tried to reinstall the original SystemWorks 2002 version
& same thing happens. I am therefore wondering if something has broken in XP
which is preventing application setups/installs from working.
A clean boot (via MSCONFIG) doesn't solve the problem.
A System Restore back a month (the oldest I've still got) doesn't solve the
problem, so whatever has happened must be a while back.
Deleteing the (masses of) stuff under the ...\user\local settings\temp makes
no difference.
Expected a winnt\temp folder to exist. No winnt folder exists. Created a
winnt\temp folder. No difference.

Cannot find anything at either Symantec KB or Microsoft KB.
Hesitated to do repair/install because of the time taken to download the
large number of updates I've installed, via. 56k dialup, afterwards.
Help!!

TIA James :-)

Your best option is to try and cleanup your system and re-install
System Works 2004 fresh.

-->> Do not attempt this without a System Image Backup

First thing is to remove all Norton/Symantec/Live products from
Control Panel Add/Remove Programs applet. (Reboot as necessary)

Remove LiveUpdate and LiveReg after the other Symantec/Norton
products.

Do a Search for the string Symantec - you will have several matches,
Delete all of the folders. (Some will be in System locations others in
individual user profile directories)

Download a Symantec tool SymClean from
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...5695800760838&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=
Run SymClean

Then download a Microsoft tool called Windows Installer Cleanup.
Run this and remove any Symantec or Norton entries.

Reboot and check System & Application Event logs for any errors.
(Indicated by a Red Icon). Verify if any errors are Norton or
Symantec related such as, CCapp.Exe, etc...

Many thanks for your speedy reply. I have no means of preparing a system
image backup. Will system restore put things back again if uninstalling NAV
entirely doesn't work? My worry is that if the procedure still fails I will
not be able to reinstall AV protection until the original problem is found
and corrected! TIA James :-)

Having checked the event log, there is an error list for each time I tried
to install the application. The log entry is :-

Faulting application NWSETUP.EXE, version 2004.7.0.81, faulting module
MSI.DLL, version 2.0.2600.0, fault address 0x0008ea7f.

I don't know whether this is any help. What is MSI.DLL used for?

James :-)

Perhaps, See that's the problem with System Restore. There is no
way to validate a point will work correctly. If you have System
Works 2004 Professional, that has Norton Ghost included in it.
(An imaging program ), but that would help until you got it installed.
Instead of the process I listed, you may just want to try a System
Restore back to a point before the problems began. Without a
reliable backup the risk of "Unintended" results is too high.

Test.

Googling "MSI.DLL" shows that the DLL is part of the Microsoft Installer
program. There are several places to get the DLL re-installing the DLL, may,
help if the original had become corrupted somehow.
There are articles in Microsoft Knowledge base involoving this DLL also.
