Application failures crop up often

Starting a week ago, messages crop up on one PC, headed "Application Error"
and containing the line "The exception unknown software exception
(0x0eedfade) occurred in the application at location (0x7c812a5b)" with an
OK radio button. Pressing that button yeilds another message stating
"Runtime error 217 at 05B6F2C2".

These crop up randomly after some applications are exited from - like
Windows Explorer, FrontPage, Internet Explorer. Does not happen every time.
At Shut Down, the same error comes up for "logonui.exe". The alphanumeric at
the end of each error message comes up different each time and for a
different application.

System running Windows XP Pro SP 2 with all updates installed. SFC /scannow,
CHKDSK /r, AntiVir, AdAware SE 6, SpyBot did not find/cure anything. Apart
from these messages, this machine runs perfectly. Never had an error whilst
within a running program.

Somebody here suggested uninstalling the printer completely and reinstalling
it as well as the VisualBasic Runtimes but did not, unfortunately leave any
specifics. The first was done without any observed change but I was not too
sure about the VisualBasic part.

Regards and thanks in anticipation for any insights.

The heading should have actually read - Application failure messages crop up
often.

I did check Event Viewer but could find nothing there related to the
messages the user keeps getting on this machine.

The only error seen (and very many repeated instances too) is a DCOM error:

"DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is
disabled
or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to
start the service upnphost with arguments "" in order to run the server:

{204810B9-73B2-11D4-BF42-00B0D0118B56}"

That is another mystery.

What changed prior to a week ago? DO you update/install anything?

Nothing AFAIK. The only change was the out-of-schedule Microsoft update,
IIRC.

Tachyon,

I get the exact same message "(0x0eedfade) occurred in the application at
location (0x7c812a5b)" with the only difference being the follow on message
stating "Runtime error 217 at 0355EA" instead of "Runtime error 217 at
05B6F2C2".

I tried all the things your other responders suggested to no avail. Have
you received any other advise from Microsoft's MVP or others helping you
resolve this?

Tachyon,

I was finally able to resolve this problem. It started for me after
installing IE 7 and
MS OneCare. I had thought I had removed all of my Norton anti-virus files.
I learned from someone at Microsoft this isn't always the case. The
recommended I down load the Norton Removal Tool and run it. I did and now
don't have that message when I close IE 7.0 Here was the Norton web site to
which I went.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...005092709200113&nsf=sharedtech.nsf&view=docid

It offered me these options:

Download the Norton Removal Tool for your version of Windows.

I use Windows XP/2000. DOWNLOAD

I use Windows Me/98. DOWNLOAD
Save the file to the Windows desktop.
2 On the Windows desktop, double-click the Norton Removal tool icon.
3 Follow the on-screen instructions.
Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to
repeat some steps after the computer restarts.
