Running XP home, reconnected after down for a year, performed updates (50)
last night now I recieve several application failures first of: rundll32.exe
, then msc.cfg, task manager doesn't load, cmd line mmc entry at run command
errored and now the run command will not active now. All applications
erroring out and I can't access msconfig to clean boot. Looks like safe mode
and virus scan, ad/spyware, etc...
Insight?

Not enough info. Was it running ok before you tried the updates? Was a
firewall on when the system went online? Have you tried removing the
updates? I install updates just a couple at a time and check the system in
between by running a few programs to make sure things are ok before doing
the next batch.

If the system is clean of malware try doing a system restore to before the
updates were installed.

Firewall = yes, windows sp2 firewall enabled + Norton firewall. Interesting
fact is that whenever I reboot Norton firewall is disabled at startup each
time, I suspect virus.
Besides firewall also behind firewall with NAT.

Have not used this pc for over a year and memory seems to point that it was
having intermittent issues.

I've determined that a hdd virus has infected this system and confirmed with
Gateway, am running sterliz to wipe drive and then re-install xp.

There is no reason to run more than one firewall. They can conflict. Also,
personally I don't recommend using any of the Norton home products including
firewall and AV. There are good 3rd party alternatives. For AV there's AVG
and Avast, both free, and NOD32 which is paid but top notch. For firewall
there are free and paid offerings from Sunbelt Software - Kerio Personal
Firewall, Zone Alarm and Comodo Personal Firewall.

Make sure to do regular checks for non viral malware using a combination of
free 3rd party programs such as Adaware SE Personal, SpyBot S&D, Windows
Defender, BHO Demon and Spyware Blaster.

I am having exactly the same issue with 3 machines, but no Norton, and
Windows Forewall is disabled. One of these machines is a brand new Lenovo
T60p, not 2 weeks old. The build is very clean.
The machine runs perfectly when in it's docking station, on the users office
LAN, but when at home, all of the applications/services that are set to run @
startup fail. Start button & taskbar are unusable, so explorer seems to be
hung as well. The strangest thing is that 2-3 minutes later the user's My
Documents folder magically opens up onto the desktop.
System Log shows only "Application Popup" errors that are of little use.

This phenomonon appears to have started around the time DST updates were
installed. No, I have not uninstalled anything as yet.

Has anyone seen this??
