we have just purchased a new computer, windows xp, pentium 4. every time i try to load one of my kids games--they install and then when we try to run them an application error comes up and wants to send a report to microsoft...faulting application version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x0010b98d...does anyone know what i should do to correct this...my kids are driving me nuts! thanks!

What games are you running? Are you running as an administrator on the
computer when you launch the games? This is only a problem if you're using
Windows XP Professional. A lot of games, especially children's games, were
written with Windows 98 / ME in mind so they don't handle NT's security
model very well.

Jimmy S. is one of Microsoft's MVP contributors. He has some great
suggestions for problems like these. I clipped some responses from one his
other posts to address the symptoms you're seeing here:

5. Your antivirus or application firewall might be conflicting with it.
- Disable the software temporarily.

6. There might be a patch available for your game to correct the issue.
- Try www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a/ or the game's site.

7. Your desktop may need to be set at least 800x600 and 16 colors.
- Click Start / (Settings) Control Panel / Click Display

8. Your Video, Sound, or Monitor drivers may need updating.
- Try updating your Video drivers using the instructions at:
http://mvps.org/nibblesnbits/Video.html#drivers

9. You might have software running on your system which is causing
conflicts.
- Temporarily disable Startup programs one at a time, starting with
Firewall,
AV, and ad blockers using:
http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php
You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm

If you're running them from a non-Administrator enabled account (Limited
account), then they probably don't have the proper rights to execute the
files on the system. Check out this Knowledge Base article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307091&Product=winxp
If this isn't the case, please post back with the names of the games
involved, and some information about your system like which graphics card
you're running with which driver.
