When I type 1/4 it automatically changes to a slightly different appearance
or style, but when I type in any other fraction, for example 3/32, it stays
the same. Does anybodu know what is going on?

Most fonts contain symbol characters for a few of the more common fractions,
and Word has AutoCorrect entries to change the typed multi-character
fractions to the single characters for those few. There are no symbols and
hence no AutoCorrect for any others.

There are several ways to get fractions that all appear similar. See
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/CreateFraction.htm for
instructions.
