Apparent SP2 Problem, but what?

I have an eMachines m6805 laptop (not that that matters), and last week I
just started having problems with my network connection. A few days a week,
I'm at home on a wireless network. The rest of the time, I'm at school wired
to a T1. Well 1st semester there were no problems, I was running SP2 (and had
updated the BIOS) and there were no conflicts with connections when I went
from one to the other (wired to wireless). First couple weeks this semester
all was well.

Then I got a NEC 6500a dvd burner. I installed DVD Shrink and Decrypter, and
was using them and the burner for about 5 days, no problems. Then, one night
last week I started having connection problems. (NOTE: whenever I get on a
wired connection, I do Fn-F2 to turn off the wireless) I tried disabling the
wireless card, tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling. The
connection was actually sending and receiving, but VERY slowly, so things
always just timed out. I would also get the error msg, "Windows - System
Error A duplicate name exists on the network."

So I couldn't figure it out, was annoyed, and just reformatted and installed
XP Pro again. Internet worked fine then, so I upgraded the BIOS, installed
SP2, and installed everything again. Things were fine until last night. I
just got back from home (the wireless connection) and was on the wired
connection, and things were fine for a couple hours. I was using DVD
Decrypter, and the internet stopped responding again. So I tried the same
things I had before, and got the same System Error. Again, it was sending and
receiving very slowly.

This morning I uninstalled SP2, and things started working again.

Anybody know what the problem could be? I can't find anything about that
error msg. Thanks a TON for any help.

Before installing SP2, did you secure your pc was clean of spyware? This is very important.

Jose - How do you recommend doing this? Now that I've uninstalled SP2, can I
just make sure it's clean of spyware and then reinstall SP2? Why is it so
important to be rid of spyware before installing it? Thanks a lot.
