App Install Failure using Windows XP SP1

Error Dialog: Install Shield Setup Launcher encountered
a problem and needs to close.
Error Signature:
App Name: setup.exe
App Ver: 7.0.100.1342
Module Name: setup.dll
Module Ver: 7.0.100.1344
Offset: 000188C0
Occurred when installing First Class Ver. 4.1.100.1332

A "Clean Boot for XP" allowed the installation to
continue and succeed. I suspect that this problem is
caused by an anomaly in my system.ini or win.ini file.

Can anyone identify the source of this problem and how it
can be corrected and avoided in the future? Thanks.

It looks like you have already identified the problem relating to the system
or win.ini files. Why do you say it is a problem in those files? Are you
saying this error ONLY occurs while installing winxp sp1, or ever since
installing sp1, could you clarify? If it only occurred during install of
sp1 and a clean boot allowed it to install then do not worry about the error
any longer. If you think it is the system or win.ini, uncheck those items
in msconfig and reboot and see if the problem occurs. If so try to only
check one of those file and see if the error is only related to one file.
then click on the corresponding tab in msconfig and uncheck each oline to
narrow it down to a single line. then once you do that then put msconfig
back in normal startup then edit that file manaully and remove the bad line

start > run > system.ini /or win.ini
it will open in notepad and allow your to remove the line, then save the
file and exit..

Ryan, Thanks for the help. I suspected it was a problem
in one of the .ini files since there doesn't appear to be
anything unusual in my startup files. This problem
occurred AFTER I installed SP1 and critical update
328310. Later, I tried to install First Class
application software which used Install Shield. Since
the application is now installed, I don't plan to do
further testing. After my original post, I discovered
that optional update 814995 fixes a problem in critical
update 328310 which may prevent some program
installations using Install Shield. Therefore, I have
installed 814995.
