AOE2 in Win XP

Age of Empires Two just quits after start up and when i install patch
"Update 2.0A" it says i need the correct cd. why is this happening and what
can i do

That message appears because the computer is having trouble recognising that
the disc you have inserted is an original copy of the game.
Have you installed the Microsoft Safedisc update for Windows XP?

Are you trying to start the game as an administrator user from an original
game cd (either the retail or oem edition with a new computer?)
