Anywhere upgrade question - CD-ROM access

I plan on buying a dell computer with windows home basics (The particular
model doesn't allow any other version). If I upgrade to the Ultimate edition
of vista online, can I get an installation disk that will allow me to install
the Ultimate edition when the internet is not available to me at no extra
cost (except shipping and postage etc)?

Are you sure the hardware would support Ultimate? If they don't
allow any other versions I would worry about the hardware.

.....keep in mind that Dell (like many other major computer suppliers) take
an O.S. and make some unique "tweaks" to suit their individual needs i.e.
working with their software and hardware. When I upgraded my Dell from
Windows 98 to ME to XP, I got installation disks from Dell that were
appropriately reviewed and "tweaked" to work well with Dell software and
hardware. The problem that I ran into was that non-Dell software that I had
installed in the interim (between upgrades) would not always be compatible
with the Dell O.S. upgrade. I ended up dumping all of the Dell installed
software and installing my own...and ended up with a computer that I still
use. I have a new notebook with Vista installed and am slowly trying to
work the problems out. Also...before you think about installing the
"Ultimate Edition", make sure that's what you really need. There are some
bells and whistles associated with that program but I could not find a
reason (at least in terms of my needs) to go to Ultimate.

My experience is that you can get a disk shipped for $7 and the cost of the
upgrade but you will need to wipe the hard disk as upgrading is not really
possible technically (at least not on a brand new Dell laptop). My advice
is stick to XP unless you have tons of time you want to waste on trying to
make Vista work.
