Anyway to block these spammers?

This is one group I've come to respect and love. most of my hardware
problems got their solutions here.
I note, disappointedly, spammers advertising stuff here. My private
gmail box would quietly put these messages into the trash can, I
wonder if such a thing is possible for messages posted into this group.

So you're saying you use a *real* email address in a USENET posting ?

There are harvesters, that collect email addresses. Use a real address
on USENET, without obfuscation, and expect to get spam in your gmail box.
You could use makREMOVETHISundi for example, leaving it to the
reader to perform the correct transformation. But it is a little
late then, for your current email address.

I used a real email address, when posting to USENET from work,
and after only two posts, I was getting spam. And this was
years ago, when spam wasn't a problem. I've used a fake address
ever since.

Many Usenet News servers delete SPAM postings. I get this group from
Individual.net, and haven't seen a advertisement on this group in well
over a year. I compare with the Cox (Highwinds) server just to make
sure no non-spam is being killed. No, just the SPAM. Well, over a dozen
advertisements in this NG on the Highwinds server today, but none on
the Individual.net server. None.

I auto-kill all posts from google posters that start a new thread, and I haven't
seen any usenet spam in quite some time.

Get a real newsfeed. Googlegroups is *NOT* usenet. I post and read via
Eternal September and never see this spam of whch you speak.

You could always complain to Google.....

I second that recommendation. Eternal September ( http://www.eternal-
september.org/ ) does a wonderful job of filtering spam. I've seen a
handful of false positive in the past, but they're few and far between.

As for complaining to Google... well... you might get better results by
talking to a brick with a smiley face drawn on it.

Indeed, I've been using them since they were a vesy small outfit called
Motzarella several years ago. I didn't give a link as the last good free
news service I used an recommended to people (news.individual.net) went
'pay' as they got too many customers to keep going free. They're still an
excellent option bor people who aren't as dirt poor as I am....

LOL, yeah. It was meant as a joke.
