Anything better than Skype ??

Fred

Skype works fine on my computer when calling Skype tp Skype. But I,ve never
had any luck calling landline or mobile. The sound is muffled or breaks up,
or I get a bad echo repeating my end of the conversation. It doesn't matter
whether I use a headset and mike, or a voip usb phone? Any suggestions?
Computer is laptop with xp and updated to latest version of skype.

There are always some inherent problems with VoIP. Skype-Skype works
fine probably it has smart buffering.

In many countries, there are very cheap phonecards which allow you to
call anywhere from a normal fixed phone (of course you have to account
for the local call charges). And you don't get any of those annoying
problems that come with VoIP. In many cases, the rate is better than
Skype-Landline, e.g. http://melbourneconnect.com.au/detail/gps.jsp

Sony claim, their IVE is the top of the pick now.
I haven't tried it, so I can't vouch for it.

Somewhere during the installation, you get a message that the free
version is only for a trial period of 60 days - this is after you enter
your email address for receiving the password.

Thanks for that, but it has a monthly fee of $9.95 for the option with
ability to call land lines. It doesn't state which currency that is. But a
plan with no monthly charges definitely has more appeal. Others such as
skype only charge for time used.

Those rates are very similar to my ISP based VoIP service which is
included with my ADSL connection. If you are in Australia or New
Zealand check out iinet for excellent value.

The point is, you don't get those jittering, echoing, muffling,
breaking-ups with phonecard calls. If the rates are similar, why bother
with VoIP at all?? I programmed my Palm to do the automatic DTMF
dialing, so there is no hussle in remembering the long PIN.

Maybe you can try an earlier version, if you do not need all of the
current bells and whistles. Look here:
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=skype

I regularly use v1.0.0.106 under Win98SE to place skype to phone
calls from peninsular FL to FL, PA, VA, MA, in U.S.A. and it works well.
However, this early version does not support incoming calls, voice mail
or any of the "new" features.
