Anyone using XFX GeForce 7600GT

J

JP

In Vista (Ultimate)? I want to upgrade my graphics card and was wondering
if anyone is using a GeForce 7600 GT based card (PCI-E). Any problems? Drivers OK?

Or suggestions for a comparable card that seems to have good working drivers.
I've been reading about the problems with the nvidia cards...

The 7600GT is one of the most popular cards expecially for those with HFTV
cards. I have seen no reports of problems with it or with any of the driver
releases that support it.

Thanks.

I have the Gigabyte SilentPipe version of that card on Vista Ultimate and
have had no problems with it. Of course, Gigabyte's utilities aren't
updated for Vista and I'm not sure if the driver versions they have are for
Vista either. I just use the drivers that came with (and are downloaded
automatically by) Vista. Nvidia has drivers (released) for the card dated 5
Jan 07. But, I hear they're the same as what Vista has. I believe there
are some more current beta drivers around Nvidia's site, but I haven't tried
them.

There are huge issues with this card and drivers in Vista Ultimate. Go
to forums.nvidia.com to read all the problems. Search on my user name
on the forum "mackmc" to read my problems.

Nvidia is working on new drivers and expect to release them at the end
of Feb.

I could not get search to work at forums.nvidia.com. Can you provide as
short description of your most critical problem when using the RTM 96.85 or
96.86 drivers. I ask this since apparently the with newer drivers NVIDIA is
trying to take advantage of new fetures available for graphic cards in VISTA
that they did not get implemented in time for the RTM release so they newer
drivers are not as feature rich as the RTM drivers as described in the
release notes for the newer drivers.

My experience

First, here is my system :

- Vista Ultimate 32 bits
- ForceWare WHQL
- 2 X GeForce 8600GT (not running SLI) PCIe 16X
- Intel Quad Core QX6700
- 4 X 1Gb RAM Corsair PC8500
- Motherboard Asus Commando (latest Vista drivers)
- 3 X Samsung SyncMaster 204B and 1 X Wacom Cintiq 21UX. All DVI.

Not a gamer. No comment.

General office and graphics computing:
WHQL drivers:
- Both monitors on the second video card flash black and then back on
frequently (10 or more times per minute) at 1600 X 1200 resolution.
Work fine at lower resolutions. The primary video card does not
exhibit this behavior.
- Beta driver causes blue screen of death and will not boot
- When the monitors shut down in power saving mode there are dozens of
warnings in the system log: Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding
and has successfully recovered.
- Ctrl-Alt-Del causes all monitors to go blank (mouse still visible)
and the only way to recover is a hard reset.

Hopefully there is a fix in the works for these errors as I'm about to
revert to Win XP until a usuable driver is released.

Do you think your problem is do to which graphics chip you are using or due
to VISTA itself or due to the NVIDIA VISTA RTM drivers (96.85 or 86) not
being able to properly handle two graphics cards properly? Did the
configuration work OK with Windows XP?

The cards and driver worked perfectly in XP Pro. It's impossible to
say if the issue is with Vista or Nvidia. I know Nvidia is working on
new drivers (hopefully in cooperation with MS).

This is pretty disappointing but typical with a new MS OS release. I
should have waited until SP1. I'm going to revert to XP if the issue
isn't resolved by March15th.

Well I agree with your position but based on your responese I do not support
your position that a single 7600GT card has major problems with Vista.

There are Forceware version 100.x drivers available now. Check at the site,
http://guru3d.com. That's where I get the Forceware beta drivers (the
latest available).

The forceware 100.59 Beta drivers are also now posted on the NVIDIA Website,
however, if you read the release notes for them you will see that they are
not as fully functional as the 96.85 drivers. Apparently NVIDIA is trying
to rewrite major portions of the drivers to take advanage of many
enhancements available in VISTA to improve performance and picture quality.
Once they complete these enhancements then I expect we will benefit with
better performance and stability.

I am running the XFX GeForce 7600GT. Every time I get it running perfectly,
Vista steps in, updates something and it goes to hell. This last time was a
series of restarts and "out of range" message on my monitor. It also will not
shut down, rather the OS shuts down but the system stays on with everything
running. All after the last (ver 100) Nvidia driver download...
