anyone know for a DECENT hit counter ?

Does anyone know where I can get a free hit counter without going to
http://www.bcentral.com who seem to be determined to get inside my machine.
Goodness knows what they expect to find in there !
Just browsed a few "free hit counter" sites and they are all very invasive
and nosey!
I think my ISP does not give me access to my raw log file unless I pay for a
hosting service.

I can't think of anything if you have no log access, sorry. You are correct
about free ones... They provide the counter to you "Free" because they sell
information they mine about your visitors' surfing habits to potential
advertisers. There is an amazing amount of info available about your
visitors if you use their "Paid" version usually.

The other problem of course is that every visit to your page causes a visit
to their website too, so if that's running slow your visitors suffer too.

My host charges $5 a month or something silly and full access, there again
he's a sort of personal friend so I haven't checked prices lately.

I can only say that's definitely the way to go if you value the privacy of
your visitors, which of course I have to in order to avoid accidentally
doing that which I despise. Don't misunderstand, I am not paranoid, I simply
like to be asked properly and give permission.

If the site is hosted by your ISP you can always ask, in which case there's
a freebie called analog that does a good job.
