go to
http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles

I did not get the beta one

pick up Dial-a-fix v0.60.0.24 (2006-10-27)

at the secondary download location

it will be a zip
make sure you unzip both files and put them into one folder
I actually called a folder Dial-a-Fix on my C: drive and put them both in
there

Now double click the icon dial-a-fix once both files are in there
Look for WU/WUAU

WU/WUAU stands for "Windows Update/Windows Update: Automatic Update".

You can read what to do on the website too

Once you do it -wait till it says it is done
reboot the computer and try windows update again

robin

Click on "fix windows Updates"

Well, it had been bugging me for a while... so I uninstalled SP3 (5508)
/ re-inastalled (5512, final).

In the process - after uninstall and before re-install - I received all
the missing updates.

(I know, these were detected by the intermediate XP SP2, and that is not
a proper diagnosis of the existing problem. Whether the problem of
undetected security updates is caused by beta SP3 is still an open issue.)

Same here, even though I have Outlook 2003 I never use it but still let the
junk mail filter install <g>

I did look back at two XP SP3 machines. Both got only the outlook junk
mail filter and the MRT. I confirmed this looking at MU History. I did a
new express scan and was offered nothing new on these machines.

I wonder if some folks are on older beta versions of SP3?

Hi Bill,

You might want to keep an eye on that issue.

All 5 Windows XP SP3 machines that I updated here recieved the following 6
updates.

1. Security Update for Windows XP (KB951376)
Updates the BlueTooth Bus Driver "bthport.sys" .

2. Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB950762)
Updates the Reliable Multcast Transport file "rmcast.sys".

3. Windows XP Cumulative Security Update for ActiveX Killbits for Windows XP
(KB950760)
This update has no binary files. It only makes changes to the
registry(updates the killbits list under ActiveX Compatibility) that prevent
certain controls from instantiating in Windows Internet Explorer.

4. Windows XP Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - June 2008 (KB890830)

5. Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB951698)
Updates the "quartz.dll" file.

6. Windows XP Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows
XP (KB950759)
You should recieve this update whether you are running IE6 or IE7

Good luck,

Donald Anadell

Hi Joan,

Well I DO have Outlook 2002 installed, and I didn't get a notification to
install a junk mail filter.

By the way, can someone please let me know if they are seeing this post as
well as the one I sent last night in which I enumerated the 6 updates that
installed?

Or am I just being ignored? :->

Thanks for the reply, Robin.

So far, every one of my SP3 machines has seen only the MRT and if
applicable, and Outlook update--from this last batch.

So--if you are seeing more, I'd recommend removing your beta SP3 version and
installing the final version.

Bill Sanderson

I'd like to try to figure out what is different--the machines I've looked at
so far are pretty diverse, other than being admin'd by me.

B

Bill Sanderson

I'll keep looking at my machines--I think I have 14 XP's and 12
Vistas--maybe there's still a beta SP3 amongst them--but I doubt it.

B

Bill Sanderson

Thanks - I am indeed interested in what is going on here--I've looked at a
pretty diverse set of hardware, including my wifes XP Home SP3 machine, and
have not seen those updates on any of them so far.

It's a bit hard to imagine what would block detection of all those
updates...

Excellent find, Engel--I would recommend that one over dial-a-fix any day.

I have no complaints about dial-a-fix, but this one looks superior to me,
and it is what I will use next time this issue arises. Maybe I should be
using it on my XP machines that seem to have missed many updates on the last
go-round?

I saw both posts, and appreciated them, Alan--I've been short of time and
not responding to much lately.

I see your posts Alan and you say that you have Outlook 2002, perhaps it is
only starting with Outlook 2003 that the junk mail filter comes into effect,
I don't know just a thought on my part <g>

Yes, I was tempted by this also - but did not use it. The reasons were:
1- I did not think the problem was with my updater; 2- this will install
windows installer 3.1 whereas I already have a more up to date 4.5, from:

if not wait a few hours and try again
if you do not see them then try using dial-a-fix and repair WU

Entirely reasonable. I've got that on my personal Vista machine, but not on
the collection of XP machines I work with--maybe now's the time to start
troubleshooting my update issue--and I'll try this first, although I think
it is not relevant--there's no sign that AU/MU/WU are not working
correctly--they run, and they find relevant updates--just not what should be
ALL the relevant updates.

I suspect what I should be doing is reading the log file--but that's REAL
drudgery...

Unfortunately, as of this writing:

"due to the level of popularity - the download has been removed pending a
code review at a higher level..."

The author hopes to have it back up again asap.
