On XP, I've only done maybe 3 machines so far, but I saw only 3 updates and
no reboot on my machines. MRT, Outlook spam filter update and a forefront
update, I think--hardly worth mentioning. On Vista and 2003, I'm seeing 5
to 7 and required reboots.

Hmm, I have XP SP3... and I have not been offered any of the 7 updates
listed here:

http://www.dozleng.com/updates/index.php?act=calendar&cal_id=1&code=showevent&event_id=53441

(The ones that really concern me are the 3 critical ones.)

Any ideas why not? I am sure my Windows Update is working well, as I
received and installed KB890830 (Malicious s/w removal) yesterday.)

No problems on this XP Home SP3 there were 7 which included the Outlook
filter one and the Malicious Software Remover. On my husbands XP Home SP2
there were 7 as well but he only runs IE6 and it failed on that one and I
haven't sorted it out yet.

I guess we'll have to go out and read the bulletins in detail to see whether
the detection is failing, or correct. Usually there is some degree of
prioritizing, and the MRT tool often comes last in my experience.

I think I am getting all the right stuff on the 2003 and Vista machines--so
maybe XPSP3 is OK..

I doubt I am going to get the time to look at this more closely today, I'm
afraid.

Hmm --thanks. I'll go back and look again at my SP3 machines that only
pulled in 3 updates.

all the updates i did were on computers running xp sp3
are you seeing any updates at all?
if not wait a few hours and try again
if you do not see them then try using dial-a-fix and repair WU
that program works for me

I did look back at two XP SP3 machines. Both got only the outlook junk mail
filter and the MRT. I confirmed this looking at MU History. I did a new
express scan and was offered nothing new on these machines.

I wonder if some folks are on older beta versions of SP3?

Google on dial a fix and djlizard, and look for a TechWiki link.

Run the newest beta version.

I looked again, and nothing new was offered. I looked at my wifes sp3
machine upstairs and was offered just the MRT--no Outlook on her machine.

I'm using Avast Free v 4.8, and with its auto-protect (or whatever it's
called) turned on, I kept getting Warning messages that different system
files were attempting to be changed. I had to click Allow All to avoid
clicking on each and every Warning message.
