you don't need ANY OS prior to using Win7 upgrade.
I already posted an article w/full insutrctions.
You may Google for it or other people psoting similar solutions.
There're 2 soltuions:

1) Double install - install WIn7 in demomode for 30days, and reinstall
over itself.
That's slow and may "pollute" harddisk, some space wasted, but it works.

2) Another method is more powerful/clean - bu modifying a registry key, it
takes 1 minute.
That is what I posted approx. 2 months ago.
But I am too busy to go search for my own article, you can Google for it.

I repeat htere's NO need for an older OS to be present on harddisk in
order to run Win7 upgrade, you can do a clean install with an Upgrade
disk.
Microsoft left this backdoor perhaps for knowledgeable people not to
complain about upgrade process being painful.

But for those who refuse to learn - they pay retail. They search for an
old disk or even buy WIndows7 Full Install disk - those are either rich or
refuse to learn software.

The double install is not time consuming, nor does it use any more
disk space. The secret is to make the second install a clean install.
That way, the first install will be saved in windows.old, which you
can delete. When I installed 64 bit Win 7 Pro, each install only
took 17 minutes, on an i7 system. Win 7 has the fastest Windows
install.
