Any way to repair a link???

Messenger 4.7 suddenly stopped starting when XP starts. Instead, the system
wants to send an error notice to Microsoft.

I found I can start Messenger if I go directly to the .EXE file, but it won't
start from a link — even a freshly created shortcut. All my other links appear
to work properly.

That kind of inaction made me suspect a virus, but a complete check with NAV
(current) turns up nothing. Nor do Ad-aware and SpyBot show anything
suspicious.

Any ideas how the broken link(s) can be corrected?

why dont you install msn messenger 6.2 that is better looking than windows
messenger?

You can also try installing windows messenger 5.0 (second in the list)

Windows XP comes with windows messenger but this is the updated version. The
Microsoft site still has version 4.7, if you want to download the version

Check for spywares with:

CWShedder
AD Aware 6.0
Spybot: Search and Destroy 1.3

Before checking; always check for updates and always run these in "Safe
Mode".

I'm afraid that wouldn't help since it's obviously not a Messenger fault. It's
either XP or some external intruder. Unfortunately, it's starting to look
suspiciously like the latter. :-(

Already done, but nothing shows up in spite of the fact matters are getting
worse. Now I can't even open Messenger with the .EXE file!

Without some effective way of tracing the problem, my only option may be to wipe
the partition clean and re-install everything.

That WON'T be fun! :-(
