Any way to fix Notepad.exe?

R

Robert Macy

For simplicity, I used Notepad to store a paragraph of descriptions
followed by a very long URL.

To be able to read the note, I left Notepad in Wordwrap mode. I
scooped up the long URL, put it down into Internet Explorer 6, only to
find that the long URL was truncated right at the wrap, as if Notepad
had permanently inserted the cr-lf ?!

Also, this happens into other applications. If Notepad is in wordwrap
mode the ctrl-c scoop up seems to permanently insert the cr-lf used
with the wordwrap into those applications, too.

Is there anyway to fix Notepad to act like the more intuitive Win98
version?

I don't want more edit function, just CORRECT edit functions. Or, is
this a hopeless quest, and I should trash Notepad.exe?

From what sources are you copy/pasting the data?

Is Notepad: Format > Word Wrap still enabled?

I thought all versions of notepad.exe did this? You mean Windows 98 one
doesn't? Well hell that is easy to fix then. Just copy Notepad.exe from
a Windows 98 machine.

From what sources are you copy/pasting the data?

Is Notepad: Format > Word Wrap still enabled?

The long URL came from visiting a website that required a great deal
of back and forth to finally arrive at 'exactly' the URL I wanted to
be at. I needed to save that URL with a good description of what the
URL is for. Thus, I ctrl-c scooped up the URL as shown on my IE6 and
placed the long URL after my notes about the website into a *.txt file
using Notepad.

In order to read the paragraph of notes I have to check the format
option wordwrap, which also wraps the long URL.

The next day when I wished to return to the same URL, I went to the
*.txt file added some notes to the paragraph and again ctrl-c scooped
up the long URL and placed it into the IE6, but was astonished to find
that the URL was truncated exactly at the wrap point, as though
Notepad had placed the cr-lf permanently into the URL. I then
deselected wordwrap, scooped up the long URL, and placed it into the
IE6 - this time with no problem. So it works, but only with an
incredible amount of sequential operations.

However, this morning, I opened the *.txt file, scooped up the wrapped
URL, placed it into IE6, and there was no problem. ARRRGGGG.
Intermittent symptoms!!

I'm guessing that editing and exercising the wrap function in notepad
somehow causes a problem.

I first noticed the problem with Notepad when Wordwrap was not acting
'properly' - automatically reforming to end of lines. I have to
manually uncheck and check wordwap to get paragraphs to reform. Plus,
when I then scooped and dropped the notepad text into a website reply
form [where they want you to write something out. Rather than compose
on line, I wrote the comments ahead of time using Notepad]; every
wordwarp cr-lf was inserted as though they were permanent! I had to
clear. Go back to Notepad, uncheck wordwrap, scoop, and drop in the
text message again. I just have never had to do this sequence with
Win98 Notepad.

Your question regarding whether Wordwrap is still enabled - I toggle
back and forth to make things work, usually leaving it with Wordwrap
enabled.

I thought all versions ofnotepad.exedid this? You mean Windows 98 one
doesn't? Well hell that is easy tofixthen. Just copyNotepad.exefrom
a Windows 98 machine.

Interestingly, WinXP [in its usual manner of continually doing things
I don't want it to do] won't let me.

In order to not to lose the original 65KB NOTEPAD.exe, I renamed it
NOTEPADoriginal.exe, only to find that immediately upon renaming it,
notepad.exe magically appeared in about 2 seconds.

Ok, how about if I overwrite that notepad with the one I brought
over? Answer yes to the overwrite question, please replace 65KB with
52KB and in two seconds, the icon changes to the new one AND notepad
changes from 52KB to 65KB

I'm going to try renaming Win98 Notepad something like Ntepad, relink
files, and see if that works.
However, simply opening the old Notepad, check Help, and select about
notepad; I get EXACTLY the same information as if I had done this with
the new Notepad. I don't know what that means, perhaps, WinXP "wraps"
the old notepad and that's where the extra 15KB comes from. But it
leads me to believe that I may not be using the old Win98 Notepad when
I think I am.

Any ideas?

The symptom of truncating the wrapped URL is intermittent. But,
Notepad inserting cr-lf at each phantom wordwrap position for dropping
into a text message at a website always occurs. Interestingly, if I
scoop the text message, drop it into Wordpad, save the file in
Wordpad, scoop it up again, and drop that into messages; there are no
phoney extra cr-lf.

Robert,

Why not leave Notepad.exe alone, put the Notepad you want to use in a
folder with a different name, and change the file associations.

Or try NoteTab Light. I've used it for years and love it. It's free
(the light version).

Yes help and about won't help in this case. As it will report the same.
But if I remember right, Notepad.exe from Windows 98 won't save with
CTRL-S. You ned ALT-F-S I think.

I don't think the symptom of truncating the wrapped URL is intermittent.
If you save while word wrapped, it gets truncated. If not, it won't.
Although I don't recall if it is immediate or if you have to reload.

Also true... WordPad, Word, and a host of other editors and word
processors don't act like this.

Sadly, it is NOT consistent. I just tried with and without Wordwrap
and the scoop using WinXP Notepad and the lay down worked perfectly.
However the Wordwrap function still is not automatic.

However, Terry's excellent suggestion of just putting old Notepad
somewhere and only using it seems to work so far. All lay down's
function correctly and all wordwraps function automatically. Thanks,
Terry!

However, now a small thing...the icon associated with the all the
files .txt is a tiny notepad inside a white field which makes it look
on the list of files as a green dot in a white rectangle. Not as easy
for me to spot as with the little notepad image.

How do I change that icon?

I did the normal route and got a list from shell32.dll which did not
seem to contain even the icon being used, nor the left handed old
Notepad icon, nor the right handed new Notepad icon?! Oddly, the new
Notepad [WinXP] is automatically been associated with .log files, but
that icon looks like a type written sheet of paper, so that's not it
either.

The icon at the top of the application is correct, though, so the icon
exists somewhere.

I deleted the link between .txt, and my old Notepad.

Then I tried to open a .txt file, since no link, I was asked for the

associated with .txt files is the "correct" icon. However, even

Now, I can't break the link between .txt and some application. or what

Any way to put .TXT back on the file type list?
