Fine Folks,

Unlike e-mail, all my options for deleting posts not downloaded and unwanted
old items are greyed out. Only way I see so far is to create a new folder
under Local Folders, name it, and copy items I want to save there. Then the
whole body of messages has to be deleted using Tools > Options... >
Maintenance tab. To avoid confusion, I would like to delete or save what I
want IN the given newsgroup folder by simply deleting those old or unwanted
items, then setting my save time in Maintenance.

Is this possible ? Have I missed something ? Or is that new folder my only
way ?

Any way to delete individual NG posts ?

Yes. This only removes them from your machine, others can still see them.

In Outlook Express highlight post(s) in the Message pane, hit your Delete
key on the keyboard and click YES to the following prompt:

---------------------------
Outlook Express
---------------------------
Are you sure you want to permanently delete these message(s)?
---------------------------
Yes No
---------------------------

Don't forget to do this once in a while...

On the Tools menu, click Options.
On the Maintenance tab, click Clean Up Now.
Click Remove Messages, click YES to the prompt.
Removes the message bodies but the headers will still be in the Message
pane.

Don't forget to Compact...

OE doesn't remove deleted messages, it only flags them to be removed at
a later time. The items are not removed until the folders with deleted
items are compacted. You need to compact all your OE folders regularly.
This saves disk space and speeds up OE.

Open Outlook Express.
To make sure you aren't receiving any mail, so your Inbox or any other
folders aren't active you need to Work Offline.
File | Work Offline (Or hit Alt + F + W).
To make sure no folders are open, highlight Outlook Express in the
Folders List.
Close the Folders List, click the X or View | Layout | Unselect Folders
List.
File | Folder | Compact All Folders (Or hit Alt + F + F + F) .
Don't do anything until your hard drive has quit thrashing.
Don't forget; File | UNCheck: Work Offline (Or hit Alt + F + W).

[[You MUST use File | Folder | Compact All Folders to avoid store
corruption. No other compaction method will compact the critical
index file, "folders.dbx". ]]

I have a vague recollection that you must install an OE service pack
before you can delete individual messages. Ask again in an OE
newsgroup - that's where you will find the experts.

Used to be a simple task. Ain't no mo'.

From your headers: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2600.0000.

You are running outdated and much less-secure versions of OE, IE, and
Windows.

1. Install WinXP SP2 & reboot.

2. Go to Windows Update and install all critical updates & reboot.

3. To delete a NG message, select (highlight) it and press the DELETE key
(or CTRL+D).

Why ask here? XP has no ability to read or navigate newsgroups. Ask
in a group with Outlook Express or OE in the title.
