Any way of finding out why parental controls is blocking something?

Richard Corfield

We enabled it out if interest, as both of us are adults, and found a
couple of things on my own web pages that it blocked:

A photograph of a "Manchester United" candle holder entitled "On a
desk at work". This is the only
picture on a page of pictures that is blocked. It is blocked in all
sizes. The picture has the tea-light
holder with the text "Manchester United Is Life", a pair of
headphones and an out of focus teddy-bear.
I took it because I thought the lighting was nice.

The index page to my photographs entitled "Amateur Radio" with
entries for the galleries
"My QSL Cards", "Ten-Tec 30m CW Kit" and "M6RJC Starting out on
2m" and photographs
of a QSL card, an electronic circuit and a random picture of a
radio or antenna.

I wondered about the radio pages whether it was the name given to one
of the antennae, the "Slim-Jim" which is a folded J shaped antenna.
I'd heard rumours those words meant something else in America.
Searching Windows Search for "Slim Jim" came up with lock picks. I had
to search for "Slim Jim Antenna" to find an antenna. Google matches
the antenna first, though I don't know how much that is weighted by my
profile which would indicate an amateur radio bias. Parental Controls
let me see how to build one, but with some grumbling about blocked
content. My photo page that is blocked doesn't itself mention the Slim-
Jim antenna.

So I wonder is there any way of finding out why Parental Controls
things something is unsuitable? Also any way of getting that changed?

When I next get back on the computer in question I'll have to explore
the rest of my photo pages to see if there's anything else it doesn't
like.

Thanks

- Richard

Man Chester United on a desk at work--sexual connotations.

Slim jim--used most frequently to break into locked cars, not something you
want the under 13 crowd to see.

Can you get it changed? Even though it's silly, not likely.

The photograph did not have machine readable text identifying it. It's
clearly football related once you've looked at the photo enough to
identify it. It's not even got lots of suspiciously shaped pink bits
in!

I didn't know about the lock pick. I call the antenna "Slim-J Antenna"
and it doesn't get mentioned much on the page. More dangerous terms
like "Morse Key" appear more often. (hmm, "Slim J" and "Key" on the
same page). Before I was 13 I'd learned how locks worked and
understood their strengths and weaknesses.

I assume the decisions were made by machine. It's amusing really. At
least unlike some blocking systems it does say it is blocked, rather
than give a "404 Not Found" as some do.

The "what have my kids been up to" feature doesn't give any more
information. I'm glad I don't use that machine for anything that is
more private. When the time comes for my own kids - will I spy like
that? I'd thought I'd run a house proxy server before all these
parental controls became popular so maybe I did plan to have that
ability. I'd have to take it as it comes. I'd hope for some mutual
respect.
