one of the pc magazines had such a thing - it put linux in a windows folder

Dragon Linux is such a system.

It does not need its own partition or its own file system.
When you set it up it creates a folder of its own, often C:\dragon, and all
its files are inside it.

You must leave windows, reboot into DOS to use it. From the DOS prompt you
go to that folder and start it with dragon as a DOS command.

When you go out of dragon linux, with quit or exit you are back in DOS and
can reboot into windows.

You need something like 800MB free on the drive you set it up on.
When you want to get rid of it you simply delete the dragon folder with all
its contents.

I don't have an url for you, but if you are interested you will have no
problems finding it.

Look for the file name dragonlinux-v2r1-full.zip (297MB) or the expression
"dragon linux". There is a lite version too (48MB), same file name but lite
instead of full. It has no gui programs, only a norton commander clone
named mc (midnight commander).

Yeah, it's somewhat counterintuitive, isn't it? :)

Interesting, thanks. I found the homepage,
http://dragonlinux.sourceforge.net/ , but it seems all has stopped to
september '02 ... :-(

You can use BOCHS at http://bochs.sourceforge.net/
It even comes with a sample linux image.
You'll need fairly fast hardware to begin with though cause it is very
processor intensive.
Worked for me.
If you have questions, post here or remove theobvious from my return
addy. I'd be happy to help you out.

seconded. bochs is stable and very processor intensive. so a
gig+ processor and appropriate patience (time is relitive)
to match you can easily boot say a knoppix cd or iso and
fiddle about with linux following pdf or web page hints,
tips and tutorials running on windows. you could also test
out other free boutique OSes without harming your current
installed OS and files. bochs 2.1 worked straight out of the
box for me just download the exe install and fiddle and read
the docs.
