Any recommendations on quiet cpu coolers?

I wish for a quiet, maximum cooling cpu fan for my AMD XP 2000 (Barton).

I have a Thermaltake Volcano 9 on it for a couple of years now but it's
losing efficiency and getting unbearable.

SPCR has reviews but not a comparison list.

Thanks

What's wrong with the stock cooler? I can't hear mine, same CPU. You
might try simply attaching a different fan to your heatsink. I did that
with my Athlon XP 1700+ that came with a globalwin HSF and sounded like
a jet taking off with a terrbile high pitched wine. I bent the clips
holding that 60mm fan on there and hooked an 80mm Vantec Stealth
instead. The system got quieter and ran a couple of degrees C cooler.

They may be expensive, but Zalman makes great coolers. I have one of
their coolers on my 6800LE (graphics card), and it cools great (and i
got free ram heatsinks :D). You can choose between 5 volt (silence) or
12 volt (cool), and switch by replugging a cable.

You are looking for a processor cooler though, and i would not recommend
taking the same one as I have, but you should take a look at <a
href=http://zalman.co.kr/eng/product/view.asp?idx=141&code=005> this
one.</a>I hear a lot of good stories about this cooler.

If you have i higher budget, you could look at watercooling.

I used to have a Volcano 11+ Xaser Edition, which is a step up from the
Volcano 9, and I was able to use any standard 80mm fan on the heatsink.
The question is, do you have an A1254 (70mm) or an A1365 (80mm).

If you have an 80mm A1365 and you have the room in your case, you could
buy an 80mm-to-120mm fan adapter and a 120mm fan for the Volcano 9
heatsink. Look up the airflow (CFM) and noise level (dBA) of your
current fan, and then buy a 120mm fan that is quieter and more powerful.
If you don't have any spare thermal paste, then you're going to have
to buy some of that too.

The XDream III is an excellent recommendation. I favor the TR2TT-M3,
which is very similar but has a 2500RPM 80mm fan that's very quiet (no
mechanical noises) for that RPM. Whichever you choose, if you order
on-line don't forget to use Google's Froogle to find a good price.

This one is so quiet (19 dB(A)) that it's almost scary:

I use it with this in-line resistor cable, which brings the noise level down
to about 17 dB(A):

Yeah, I know, it says it's for a specific model of Pentium 4 cooler, but
I've built several AMD systems with this combo and it works fine. Actually,
you can use the cable with pretty much any cpu fan. Check your CPU temp in
BIOS and you'll see for yourself!
