Somehow my settings for auto play, auto run (or whatever. These supposedly
not the same) got changed, probably by a trash program.

It seems complicated to get rid of Windows "helping me" starting up inserted
media automatically.

Is there any quick way to disable auto play for all optical drives, for all
inserted media (CD/DVD) and with all types of content?

Windows XP (SP3)

Right click the drive (in Explorer), select properties, go to the autoplay
tab, select "mixed content", do the obvious and apply.

Or if that doesnt work with some pen drives etc. - search the registry
for all instances (from memory about 6) of
"NoDriveTypeAutoRun" and set them to FF hex.
