I have just done a clean install of wondows XP Pro on a new hard drive.
Curiosity drove me to investigate why a new install has claimed over 5.5 gb
of space. I have found a file, hiberfil.sys at the root of th windows
directory which is 1.3 gb. I don't want or need to do anything with it, but
am jusr curious as to what such a large file is.

Any info appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

Hibernation entries. Turn it off if you don't use it. See HELP & SUPPORT.

It's the hibernation file. You can disable hibernation in the Control
Panel, Power Options, Hibernation tab.

Thanks for the replies - quick and informative

Hi Steve,

If you do not use hibernation, make sure you do not have it enabled, which
reserves disk space equal to your RAM. If you have a hidden file on the root
directory of your C-drive called hiberfil.sys, hibernation is enabled.

To remove that file, go to Display Properties, Screensaver, Power, Hibernate
tab, and uncheck the Enable hibernation box.
