Any GOOD apps that can copy small parts of an AVI?

I want to copy a small part of a large AVI i've got to send to a friend,
I've tried a few programs but the resulting AVI was of very ordinary
quality. Does anyone know of any good freeware tools that can copy parts of
an AVI while maintaining the quality??

If you`ve got XP you can use Windows Movie Maker 2,
it`s already on your machine.
