Does anyone know of freeware similar to Maya 3D, which does animation, visual effects, etc.?

Thanks

Blender is a full featured 3D animation package. It has mucho tools and
they are really taking off now that the software is open source. Latest
version has any object as a light source with radiosity. Newer features
are still under construction but it's only been open source for a year.
Nearing critical mass. Considering the learning curve for any 3d app,
you'll be glad you got started now.

By the way, you could also use the program as a video compositing
sequencer including support for sound tracks. Kind of slow, but as far
as video freeware goes, there aren't many out there.

For modeling try Wings3D and hamaPatch

http://www.wings3d.com
http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Ginza/6625/index.html

but Blender is soon to have a lot of the features of Wings and already
has several high end modeling tools. To see what the community is up to
go to Elysian

It puts watermarks on everything you make with it, so it's only useful as a
learning or evaluation tool for the full Maya 3D product...

Actually, as of today (I think) Maya has a free edition with almost
all of the abilities of the commerical edition. They have it on their
website at:

http://www.alias.com/eng/products-services/maya/maya_ple/index.shtml

It is dubbed the Maya Personal Learning Edition. Slashdot also has an
article on it.

Maya LE (lerning edition) is NOT the best.. it is NOT for comercial use, the
renderer is watermarking through the renderes, and if you buy MAYA later,
the work done in LE will NOT open in MAYA.

Some 3D freeware programs (sorry, no links)

-Blender
-wings 3d (Polly MODELER ONLY)

Of course there is a Comercial 3D app with Great support, and at a VERY
afordable price

I can NOT mention it here (non freeware in a Freeware group) but for more
info, Email: (e-mail address removed)

(ATTENTION SPAMMERS: all messages are skimmed over and all mesages NOT
regarding this question will be deleted.. don't waist your time).
