This is not a registry problem as I believe have done all the fixes there.

I can use any programme to read and write to CDs and DVDs nut not by way of
using drag and drop in XP explorer itself. The CD is not seen as writable.
Registry fixed to know the cdrw to be writable.

The drive is recognised when put into other XP machines, so it is not the
drive.

I think the program (? from Roxio) that XP uses has been corrupted or
replaced. Does anyone know the files that are used so I can copy them
across and see it that fixes this irritating problem.

What "any programme" are you using? Depending on the burning application,
XP's native burning must be disabled.

Check:

In Control Panel - Admin Tools - Services. Look for IMAPI CD Burning
and make sure it is Started. If not, d-click, set Startup type as
Automatic, and click Apply. I would then reboot to make sure other
things see it at boot as having started (and check that it has).

If that is OK; My Computer, r-click the drive. Properties and on the
Recording page make sure 'Enable recording' is checked
