SpyBot advises me to fix this key in Microsoft/security center/ from the
registry. Key value is set to 1. Other values in this category are all set
to 0. SpyBot tells this is a "Registry Change".

Should I accept Spybot's advice and agree to let it "fix" the registry? Why
is it a "registry change". How does SpyBot know that this is not the default
value?
Thank you,
Peter

What spybot is doing is aking you to turn off the (shield) notification that
XP provides you about outdated Antivirus software.

I would not do this!

What I would strongly suggest is that before you continue any further that
you visit http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/default.mspx to get a good
basic understanding of Windows XP Security and available tools.

Last year, the makers of Spybot S & D decided to
include a feature which would report if alerts that are
generated by the Windows Security Center have been disabled. A
number of antivirus programs (McAfee, Norton, etc.) disable the
antivirus alert during installation. Unfortunately, some
spyware does this as well so Spybot S & D
will report this behavior.

If you want to test this, do the following: run Spybot and have
it fix those two problems. Now restart your computer. At some
point during the startup process you may receive a message from
your AV program asking if you want it to stop Windows Security
center from monitoring your AV protection. Answer yes. Run
Spybot and you're going to see those errors showing up again.
If you right click on the errors in Spybot you can choose to
exclude them from future scans.

From the Spybot web site:

Center?

Here are a few threads from the Spybot forum which
discuss this issue:

FYI, I've set Spybot to ignore this registry change on systems
with the above mentioned AV programs.

Good luck

LOL! Hopefully not like you have an understanding of Spybot.

What Spybot is doing is warning he user that the Security Center AV
warning was already turned off, and it asking the user if that is what
they really want, and if not, Spybot will turn it back on.

What I do is right click on each one and choose, "do not report this
detection again" or something to that effect. I prefer to monitor my own
security apps, thank you very much!
