Antivirus restarted during XP reinstall, loading won't complete...

Is there anyway to shutdown the antivirus program after Win XP has been
almost completely reinstalled so it can finish the finalization process. I've
tried to reboot and F8 to access SafeMode and it tries too but states
incomplete Windows setup and takes me right back to the installation setup
screen. Before I go ahead and format the drive and lose all my files, I would
like to try... anything at this point. Any suggestions out there?

How can an antivirus application, or any application for that matter, be
running before you install it? You are doing a clean install of Windows,
right?

Kevin, thanks for the response however, this is not a clean install I'm
doing. Windows got a bit glitchy and I was re-installing XP over the
existing. PC-cillin is the antivrus program and I did shutdown it down but
when XP does a reboot during it's re-install, PC-cillin restarts as well. XP
gets to the point of Finalizing the Installation but freezes at 7 minutes
remaining because PC-cillin supposedly intervenes at that point. Tried to do
the Safemode thing to shut it down but can't even get Windows to open up in
Safemode! Very bad my friend as I really don't want to format and lose the
works. Any help would be more than appreciated.

A real 'Catch-22'. As you now know, never, ever try to re-install XP
with an anti-virus program installed. Anyway, at this point, I would
utilize a bootable CD, like the Ultimate Boot CD found here:
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/. Just boot to the CD and use one of the
included utilities to delete the Anti-Virus folder - or just rename it
so the A/V program can't run anymore.

Have fun

Thanks Homer. Downloaded the Ultimate Boot CD and ran it. Unfortunately it
could not find the "C" drive and indicated some other obscure drive letters.
I looked at the contents of each drive but they did not display any of the
associated content files that I was looking for with regards to the antivirus
program that I wanted to delete. Tried for about 5 hours and finally gave
up... ended up formatting the drive. Again, some kudo's your way for trying
to help me out.
