Some might be annoyed at the nag screen in version 7 ( notify.exe)which
suggests you buy the premium. This can to some extent be disabled/blocked
with firewall .However you will have a message from antivir saying its
being blocked by a firewall ,so that might nag you as well.

Downloaded and installed flawlisly. Only problem I noticed is that the

from the download-site (at this time) : "Program-Release: 6.32.00.51"

does anyone know if that is the same version you get from autmatic
update? I have the very same version when I look at the dialog box.

And is that really version _7_ with No. _6_.32.00.51?!?

I just renamed NOTIFY.EXE (in version 6) to something else and no longer get
the nag screen. Maybe it'll work in version 7?

Sorry to say, but uninstalled this one again...
1. It seems to be very cpu-aggresive on my W98-box...
2.The update don't work. Probably it's because og a massive downloading
in these days...

Tried to reinstall ver. 6, but the *.vdf-files is probably on the same
server, so no update at the moment..

Will wait a few days and try it again..

For now AVG is reinstalled...

Are you sure you're talking about the final version 7 ?
I had that problem with version 6, but after installing the new version
yesterday I didn't have that problem anymore.

Strange, I found a file called av-notify.exe on my system, that must be
it, but I don't get the nag screen on updating. And still no nag from the
new Smart-FTP beta (other thread) either.
I'm not complaining.

Consider yourself lucky then. After install, I renamed avnotify.exe and
then updated. I got no nag, but it restored that file on the first
update and I got it next time. I then renamed it again and it was fine.
I find it ridiculous that they run ads like that. Cheapens the product.
When I see something like that, it makes me want to uninstall it, so I
did. I think AntiVir is a great program, but I refuse to use something
that bombards me with ads like that. There's no excuse for it. If I
want to buy the Premium version, I will. I don't need them shoving ads
in my face for it and bothering me.

My 2 cents anyway.. ;)

I agree, I do consider myself lucky, but you could say that antivir is
lucky. I too would uninstall it before you could say 'virus' if it would
nag me like that, and reinstall AVG.
YMMV though, I dislike any advertisement to upgrade or buy other products
from the same company, popups or otherwise visible, but there are
exceptions, like Foxitreader, because there's no way I would go back to
Adobe Reader.

You are contradicting yourself. It doesn't seem to be the principle of
nag screens, it seems to be the product itself that you consider when
making your choice.

Er..yes, no, maybe. Besides my paid-for-OS, I use only freeware. When
software nags me, I uninstall it, if there's a similar no-nagging
alternative. Here's my problem, I really need a PDF-reader. Only two
freeware ones I'm aware of are Foxit and Adobe. Little blue banner vs.
slug-and-sssssllllllowbloat. I used both, got rid of both, got both back.
In the end, the speedy little blue banner won.
I don't make my decisions on one element, it's a balance in which
advertisement plays a large role, but so do speed and size.
Hand me a freeware ad-free PDF-reader which is close to being as fast as
Foxitreader and I'll switch before you can say 'pdf'.

If I
want to buy the Premium version, I will. I don't need them shoving ads
in my face for it and bothering me.

Me, too.

But on my copy of ver.7 there was a built-in provision to disable the
Notifier!

I had not used AntiVir before, so it was not an upgrade, and I had no
remnants of an older version on my system.

Before I attempted to update the data file I had to add the antivir
update exe to my firewall, Kerio215. I didn't know anything about
avnotify, so I didn't add it to Kerio. The result was when I went for
the first undate, AntiVir produced the following error message:

"The #PRODUCTNAME Notifier was not able to gain access to the
Internet. This is probably prevented by a Firewall. It is imperative
that the #PRODUCTNAME Notifier has access to the Internet, in order to
get information of the #PRODUCTNAME Personal Edition in future.

Information which is provided in the PRODUCTNAME Notifier can contain
important innovations regarding current viruses or indications for the
security of your PC. Please release the application #PRODUCTNAME
Notifier in your firewall settings, if you want to obtain these
information.

If you do not want to receive these information, you can turn off the
#PRODUCTNAME Notifier on every new information through the check mark
'deactivate Notifier for this message'." [This message included a
check box, apparently to deactivate the Notifier.}

I still wasn't sure what I was doing, but if I had to deactivate
something called Notifier to make the updater work, I would do it.
And, bingo, I'm getting the updates and none of these "important"
notifications.

My conclusion is that there is a mechanism in the free AntiVir to kill
nag notices. I just prefer somthing more open and transparent that I
wouldn't have to use by stumble upon it.

That built in provision was/is on every (free) version as far as i know
,but last time i tried the free version ,you had to repeat the procedure
you just described after EVERY update. However it was in beta then so
maybe its been changed.
