AntiVir and Clipomatic

Hiya, everybody,

I just updated the AntiVir version again, and now whenever I update the
definition files, I get something called 'Notifier' that wants to access
the internet. Can anybody give me an idea of whether I need it or not?
When I deny access I get a message from AntiVir that I don't really
understand (the English is not too clear). It seems to be some sort of
applet to tell me if there's a newer version of AntiVir available.

Also, I dl'd Clipomatic but when I installed it, I got an error message
that it couldn't access the necessary hot keys. Can anybody tell me how
to fix that? Please tell me as if I know *nothing* about computers; I'm
pretty clueless about hot keys.

Thanks!

Chances are the hotkeys defined for clipomatic are the same as the
hotkeys defined for some other application, so they conflict.
For example, I believe if you look in clipomatic's `settings'
the hotkey for paste my be defined as <Ctrl><Alt>C (that means
hit the control key, the Alt key and the character C, simultaneously).

This is a pretty common hotkey combination, and may be defined in the
shortcut to another program. I fix this by adding the Shift key, so
you must hit 4 keys (!) simultaneously to paste: <Shift><Ctrl><Alt>C
(not as hard as it sounds). Each hot key must be unique, and not used
for other programs.

Okay, I'll do that, if you tell me how. As I said, I'm clueless about
hot keys.
Unfortunately, the hotkeys the user can define in shortcuts to
programs work all the time, no matter what program is actively used.
So a windows hotkey can conflict with a hotkey (usually called an
accelerator key) defined within another program.

There is a freeware program called HotKey detective that will show you
all the hotkeys that have been defined in windows shortcuts. Pick one
that has not been used for any new hotkeys.

I'll go look for that. Thanks.

I removed Antivir's Notifier : nothing happened
I renamed ,, : ,,
I blocked ,, : ,,

there is no reason why Notifier should inform Antivir
In my opinion it's some Antivir spyware and that's means : block it and
remove it.
There is one problem ;-) : after a main Antivir update Notifier is back
again.
Well, remove/rename it again.
The internetupdate function from Antivir tells you if there is newer Antivir
software available.

Okay, that's what I thought. It looks like just a device to let AntiVir
try to sell you some of its other apps. My firewall will stop it if I
so instruct, I think.

I'll go look for that (hot key detective)

This program, available as hkd.exe, is one of the PCmagazine utilities
that used to be free, but now are only downloadable if you `join'
pcmagazine for a fee. However I found the program here:

http://users.ev1.net/~bash/hkd.exe

Enter the line above into your internet browser, and your browser should
download it automatically. Then find, hkd.exe on your computer and double
click it. A screen will open, with a window on the left showing all the
keyboard combinations are are currently being used for windows hotkeys or
keyboard shortcuts.

To delete or change one of these keys, click on a key combination listed,
then left click on the button to the right of the screen called, `Locate
with explorer'. Windows explorer will then open, with a highlight located
over the shortcut for the program. Right click on this highlighted item,
and choose, ``Properties' from the resulting menu. Up pops the shortcut
menu. From this menu hit the `shortcut' tab, and a page appears containing
a space to define the hotkey. Either delete this key combination altogether
or hit another key combination in this space. Then press <OK> and you have
changed or removed they keyboard shortcut for that program.

Okay, I'll do that, if you tell me how. As I said, I'm clueless about
hot keys.

For changing the hotkey in clipomatic, right click on the clipomatic icon
in your system tray, select `settings' from the resulting menu. AT the
top of the screen that pops up, is a space for the ``Paste Key'' click in
that space, and backspace or hit delete until the keys in this field are
gone. Then type in your preferred keys, for example, hold down the Shift,
Alt, and CTRL keys and hit the key for the letter, p, you should not see
this in the `paste key' area: Shift+Ctrl+Alt+C. Now hit OK and you have
defined a new hot key to pop up clipomatic's short cut.

Hope this is enough detail to help,

howard

It should have - that's the correct unmunging. (Is there such a word?)
