AntiSpyware update does not resolve expired message

No matter what release I try with AntiSpyware, the end result is I am
prompted with the "this version expired" message. Install old and upgrade,
reinstall, remove-reboot-reinstall, even selecting the "upgrade" choice when
prompted......I still end up with the "expired" message. Any ideas? This is
the second machine in a row I am having this problem with....both new XP P4
builds all patched up with firewall off running Symantec.....................
I have countless other boxes that until now never had an issue running
antispyware.

Bill I have the same problem. I've followed your advise, as posted. The
update appears to download. Then, when the icon is double clicked, the
"expired version" message pops up yet again. I'm getting this on several pcs
and our office server. What else do you suggest?

Hello Allison,

you may try this:

Look in the folder:
c:\WINDOWS\Installer\
for the file: gcasSWUpdater.exe
delete the folder with the 3 files in there and do a new install.

Sorry--we don't seem to have a sure solution that works for everyone.

I'm interested in Tom Emmelot's suggestion, and haven't been able to test it
myself. If you can find the folder and files he is talking about--I'm
guessing that the gcasSWUpdater.exe file is in a subdirectory of
\windows\installer--I would go ahead and try his method, and let us know
whether that does the job for you.

Otherwise, one other suggestion that I would make is to delete the \program
files\microsoft antispyware folder and all sub-folders. You'll lose access
to any quarantined items, custom settings, and history info. Then try
updating with the downloaded file again.

In the end, I basically did just that. I completely deleted the Antispyware
file and all its content from my program files. Then shut down & rebooted.
Then attempted to do a fresh install. No luck. Rebooted again. I went
through the process of downloading & rebooting SEVEN times. I finally
imported it to my system via email from another pc in the office, saved it
out on my system and it magically began to import and update. I have no idea
why. I'm now attempting to load it in this manner to our server and see if I
can get it to work.

There is obviously a 'bug' in this process to be so user-unfriendly. I hope
MS will find a solution soon. I can't waste 3 hours per machine attempting
to load an update!!

One possibility is that simply repeating the process is the key. I've almost
never run into this myself. When you mention a server, what's the nature of
the network? Is this a Small Business Server (SBS) based network, which
includes ISA server which caches web traffic?
