There is a conflict with some third-party software running on your system.
I've seen one report that scanning was dramatically speeded up by disabling
real-time monitoring with a particular antivirus. I've seen another that
resource usage went up when a VNC connection was established with another
machine. Try shutting down third-party services and applications and see
whether you can spot where the conflict is.
