Antec Sonata II Power Supply Faulty

VanShania

Built a computer for my nephew using an ASRock 939Dual-VSTA ULi M1695 Socket
939, 3700 + cpu, 1 gig OCZ Platinum, and a Sonata II with 450 watt power
supply. After in use for over a week, gotta call stating the computer shut
off and when the power button was pressed, all that happened was the fans
would spin a little bit and then nothing. Changed the PS still under
warrenty and computer is back in shape. Some other people had a similar
problem so I hope this helps them out.

Vansh, Nice helping out the nephew. How do like his ASRock board
compared to your Gigabyte? ..just general impressions.

I wouldn't recommend it for a first time builder as the manual is sparse at
best. It does have a bios that is overclocker friendly(though they use some
different terms like MA timing for what I hope is CMD timing as I set it to
1T). It seems like a good board that would allow a slow switch from a socket
A system to PCI-Express board. It does allow a cheap way to upgrade. The
computer has only been running for a couple of weeks and I haven't flashed
the bios or done any benchmarks, but it certainly seems like a stable board.
The only thing I didn't like about it is the SATA setup. I may have misread
the manual as I just glanced at the sata stuff but to use the SATA 300, you
have to set a jumper that may disable the 2 sata150 ports. So you can use 2
sata150 drives or one sata300 drive. I would phone asrock and ask about that
before purchasing if you plan on using at least 3 hard drives.
Compared to my Gigabyte, the asrock appears just as stable if not more so
since I didn't have to load raid drivers like I do for the Gig board to make
it run fine. I actually wish I would have known about this board before I
bought the gigabyte as it has just as much expandability as the gigabyte and
then some. Like I said before though, the manual for asrock is sparse, and
first time builders will want to stay away from it. Gigabyte, Asus and MSI
have good manuals that describe every detail about building a new computer
and setting up the bios.
