I am using a TruePower II 550EPS12V.

How much current are you drawing from it? Did you try a different PS in
the same system?

I've installed several of them and never known any of them to get more than
warm. What is it powering and what's the airflow through the case like?

Same here. I bought a TruePower II 380 to power my AMD 939 system
and now it's being used to power my Intel 775 system, both with a
BFG 7950GT/512 MB video card. Very little air comes out of the power
supply and it's no more than warm.

Efficiency, no. Can air move through it -- does the underside over
the CPU draw from 80mm fan and exit from a 60mm in the back? Ever
opened one up to find it full of yellow caked-on dust?

Air flow should be fine. Ambient temperature is
about 28 degree Celsius. It's a Asus M2N-E
motherboard using AMD X2 3800+ CPU, 4 sticks
of DDR2-800 RAM.

It's not very hot, but it's not definitely
not as cool as another cheap 350W power supply.

One more: Asus 8600GT 256M RAM PCIe display card.

Given the rest of the configuration I doubt a cheap 380W PS would be
enough...

Considering a 80% PS efficiency, that means that 1/4th of the power
drawn by your components is dissipated as heat...

Please add 2 seagate 7200rpm hard disks in RAID 0 and
a GeForce 8600GT 256M.

I would upgrade to 9600GT 512M, and maybe a 4-core
AMD CPU.

I inserted a regular thermometer into the case.
it read 37 degree C.

I've pointed this out before, and the fact its a good couple of lines too
long.
And why do some Linux geeks think we all want to know how long their PC has
been switched on for anyway?

Not hot at all considering the temperature of your room. If you want
cooler, buy an air conditioner and use it.

I rather ask a god/goddess to rotate the axle of the planet
Earth. It would be more green. :)

Or maybe sending a meteror down to the country
that produces the largest amount of greenhouse
gases. :p

I hope you didn't insert it into the PSU case because there's a lot of
exposed high voltage in there, often including one of the big
heatsinks. I've measured 170 volts DC on Antec TruePower I and
SmartPower I heatsinks. It's safer and about as accurate to measure
against the outside of the back of the PSU case, near the outer fan.

TruePowers (but not TruePower Neos) are made by Channel Well
Technology, which uses those bad Fuhjyyu brand electrolytic
capacitors, and they wear out even faster than usual because the PSU
fan runs so slowly (I've measured < 900 RPM) that they're exposed to
higher than normal temperatures. The TruePower Neos and regular
Neos, Earthwatts, Trios, Basiqs, and I believe Quattros are made by
other companies that use better capacitors, OSTs or Capxons. OSTs are
actually not that good, but they're still much better than Fuhjyyus.
